Google Gemini Comes to Polestar and Volvo EVs

The next phase of in-car intelligence has officially begun. Polestar and Volvo Cars are rolling out Google Gemini across their electric vehicle lineups, replacing traditional voice commands with a far more natural, conversational experience.

Starting in the United States, the rollout is being delivered via over-the-air (OTA) updates to vehicles equipped with Android Automotive OS. More regions and languages are expected to follow in the coming months.

From Voice Commands to Real Conversations

For years, in-car assistants have relied on rigid, command-based inputs. That’s now changing.

With Gemini, drivers can speak naturally to their cars—no memorized phrases required. Instead of saying, “Navigate to a supermarket,” users can now request something like:
“Find a supermarket on my way home and text Joe that I’m on my way.”

The AI understands context, handles follow-up questions, and adapts to complex requests in real time. This multi-turn dialogue capability marks a major leap forward compared to the previous Google Assistant experience.

What Gemini Can Do Inside Your EV

The integration brings a wide range of practical, everyday features designed to reduce distraction and improve convenience:

– Smarter trip planning: Ask for destination ideas, refine them with follow-up questions, and discover activities along the way.
– Better route stops: Find specific food or services along your route, complete with reviews and parking info via Google Maps.
– Advanced messaging: Summarize incoming texts or send detailed messages with translation built in.
– Personalized media control: Request music or content based on mood, not just genre or artist.

For example, a driver could say:
“Message Sophie that I’ll be 10 minutes late and send it in French.”
Gemini handles both the content and translation seamlessly.

Introducing Gemini Live: Hands-Free AI Conversations

A standout feature is Gemini Live, activated with: “Hey Google, let’s talk.”

This enables ongoing, hands-free conversations with the car. Drivers can brainstorm ideas, create shopping lists, or even plan meals—all without taking their hands off the wheel.

The system also leverages large language models to break language barriers, allowing real-time translation directly within messages.

Polestar’s AI-First Approach

For Polestar, this rollout is the latest step in a long-standing partnership with Google that dates back to 2018.

The Polestar 2 was the world’s first car to launch with native Android Automotive OS, integrating Google services like Maps, Assistant, and the Play Store directly into the vehicle.

With Gemini, Polestar is doubling down on that strategy—favoring deep integration with Google’s ecosystem over building its own proprietary infotainment system, unlike competitors such as Tesla.

The update is available across all current Polestar models (except the Polestar 1) and requires no additional hardware. Drivers will receive a prompt on their center display to opt in.

Volvo’s Human-Centric AI Vision

Volvo Cars is taking a similar approach but with a strong emphasis on usability and safety.

As a lead development partner for Google’s automotive AI initiatives, Volvo is helping shape how Gemini functions in real-world driving scenarios. The goal is simple: reduce cognitive load and keep drivers focused on the road.

Gemini is also part of Volvo’s broader software push, including its recently introduced Volvo Car UX—a major infotainment overhaul rolling out globally via OTA updates.

Notably, Volvo models dating back to 2020 will be eligible for the Gemini upgrade, extending next-gen AI capabilities to millions of vehicles already on the road.

The Bigger Picture: AI Becomes the New Interface

The introduction of Gemini signals a fundamental shift in how drivers interact with their vehicles. Instead of tapping screens or issuing rigid commands, the car becomes a conversational partner—capable of understanding intent, context, and nuance.

This evolution could redefine the in-car experience, making it more intuitive, less distracting, and significantly more powerful.

For EV makers like Polestar and Volvo, it also highlights a broader trend: software—and especially AI—is becoming just as important as hardware in shaping the future of mobility.

As Gemini expands to more markets and languages, this “conversation-first” approach may soon become the new standard across the automotive industry.
