Citroen Confirms Affordable Electric Car Inspired by the Legendary 2CV

Citroen has officially confirmed plans for a new affordable electric vehicle inspired by the philosophy of the legendary Citroen 2CV, signaling a fresh push toward simple, accessible mobility in the EV era.

The announcement comes as part of Stellantis’ broader FaSTLAne strategic plan, which aims to expand affordable electrified transportation across Europe and other global markets.

Rather than creating a retro-style revival, Citroen says the upcoming model will reinterpret the original 2CV’s core principles for modern drivers. The focus will be on affordability, lightweight engineering, practicality, versatility, and distinctive character — qualities that made the original 2CV one of the most influential small cars ever produced.

Originally launched as a simple and inexpensive solution for everyday transportation, the 2CV became famous for its comfort-focused design and clever engineering. Decades later, those same values are becoming increasingly relevant as consumers look for smaller, more affordable EVs that can handle growing urban restrictions and rising vehicle costs.

Citroen describes the future model as a response to the challenges of modern electric mobility, particularly in cities where low-emission zones and stricter regulations are reshaping transportation. The new EV is expected to help create a new category of affordable small electric cars that prioritize freedom of movement without sacrificing personality or usability.

The brand also emphasized that innovation does not necessarily mean adding more complexity or technology. Instead, the goal is to simplify mobility and focus on what drivers truly need in daily life.

While details about the new vehicle’s launch timing, specifications, and pricing remain under wraps, the project aligns closely with Citroen’s recent push toward budget-friendly electric vehicles.

That strategy is already visible with the Citroen e-C3, particularly its urban-range variant, which has been positioned as a practical answer to today’s mobility challenges. The e-C3 has attracted attention for offering a more attainable entry point into electric driving compared to many higher-priced rivals in the European market.

With demand growing for compact and affordable EVs, Citroen’s upcoming 2CV-inspired model could become one of the most interesting small electric cars to watch in the coming years.
