Volvo Construction Equipment has officially started serial production of its new A30 Electric and A40 Electric articulated haulers, becoming the first manufacturer to mass-produce battery-electric machines in this size category.
The move marks a major milestone for the heavy equipment sector as electrification expands beyond compact machines and into high-demand industrial applications. It also strengthens Volvo CE’s position as one of the industry’s most aggressive players in zero-emission construction technology.
First unveiled at Bauma 2025, the A30 Electric and A40 Electric generated strong early interest from customers in quarrying and mining, two sectors under growing pressure to cut emissions while maintaining productivity.
Production Start at Volvo CE’s Braås Plant
Production of both models is now underway at Volvo CE’s Braås facility in Sweden. The site carries special significance for the company, as it was also the birthplace of the world’s first articulated hauler, Gravel Charlie, introduced in 1966.
Launching electric articulated haulers at the same plant highlights how Volvo CE is pairing its long engineering legacy with the latest advances in battery-electric technology.
Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE, described the launch as a key moment in the company’s transition strategy, saying the start of serial production proves electric solutions are now capable of handling demanding, high-productivity workloads.
A30 Electric and A40 Electric Bring Zero-Emission Hauling to Heavy Duty Jobs
The A30 Electric offers a payload of 29 tonnes, while the larger A40 Electric can carry up to 39 tonnes. That makes them two of the biggest battery-electric machines in Volvo CE’s growing electric lineup.
Because articulated haulers typically operate for long hours in energy-intensive environments, switching to electric power can deliver meaningful emissions cuts while also improving total cost of ownership over time.
Depending on the job and site conditions, both models can deliver up to six hours of runtime on a single charge, making them suitable for a wide range of quarrying, mining, and heavy construction tasks.
First Customer Deliveries Begin in Europe
The first production units will be delivered to customers in the United Kingdom and Norway in the coming weeks. Volvo CE also plans to expand deliveries to selected customers across Europe in the second half of 2026.
Fredrik Tjernström, who leads electromobility solutions sales at Volvo CE, said customer demand since the Bauma reveal has exceeded initial expectations, with interest already stretching beyond the first planned production schedule.
A Key Step in Heavy Equipment Electrification
The start of serial production for the A30 Electric and A40 Electric is more than a product launch. It signals that battery-electric heavy-duty hauling is moving from pilot projects into real-world industrial use.
For Volvo CE, it is another important step in a broader strategy to expand its electric portfolio and support customers at different stages of their decarbonization journey. As pressure mounts to reduce emissions across construction and mining, large-scale electric haulers could soon become a much more common sight on job sites.
