Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 Updated with Bigger Batteries and V2L in UK

Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5 have received a broad set of upgrades in the UK, bringing longer driving ranges, improved performance, smarter technology and new energy-sharing features — all while keeping price increases to a minimum.

The latest updates strengthen Volkswagen’s position in the competitive electric SUV market by making both models more practical and appealing for everyday drivers.

Bigger Batteries and Improved Range

Selected trims in the ID.4 and ID.5 lineups now come with batteries offering higher usable capacity, stronger performance and more driving range than before.

One of the biggest improvements comes to the ID.4 Pro 4MOTION models, which now deliver 299 PS and a WLTP combined range of up to 341 miles. That gives drivers more power on demand while also extending real-world usability on longer journeys.

The performance-focused GTX versions of both models also benefit from updates. Although these variants now use batteries with slightly lower net capacity, Volkswagen says efficiency improvements elsewhere in the vehicle help maintain the same strong power output while adding a few extra miles of range.

V2L and Bi-Directional Charging Add More Flexibility

A major new feature for the updated range is vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, along with bi-directional charging support.

With one of two new optional adapters, drivers can use the vehicle’s charging port to power external devices such as camping equipment, tools or small household appliances. This added flexibility makes both electric SUVs more useful beyond daily commuting.

An optional 230-volt power socket is also now available across both model ranges, further boosting convenience.

Smarter Tech and Practical Upgrades

Volkswagen has introduced several comfort, safety and usability enhancements across all trims.

Key updates include:

– Physical steering wheel buttons replacing touch-sensitive controls
– Traffic Assist now with Front Cross traffic support to better protect pedestrians and cyclists
– Improved One Infotainment system
– Enhanced driver attention monitoring
– Faster wireless phone charging, now increased from 5W to 15W
– More efficient optional heat pump

For ID.4 Pro 4MOTION models, towing capability has also improved significantly. Braked trailer capacity has increased from 1,200 kg to 1,800 kg, making the SUV more versatile for drivers needing extra utility.

Trim-Level Improvements

Entry-level Pure Essential versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 now come with larger 19-inch steel wheels as standard.

Meanwhile, Pure Match trims gain an electric tailgate, adding convenience without pushing up costs significantly.

Volkswagen says most of these specification improvements come with little or no extra cost, helping maintain strong value in the electric SUV segment.

Model Background and UK Pricing

The ID.4 was Volkswagen’s first global fully electric SUV and first launched in 2021. It went on to win the 2021 World Car of the Year award, underlining its significance in the brand’s EV strategy.

The ID.5 followed in early 2022 as Volkswagen’s first electric SUV-coupe, offering a sleeker design and practical fast-charging USB-C power delivery ports for devices such as laptops.

In the UK, the updated ID.4 and ID.5 ranges now start from £36,995 (on-the-road, including VAT).

Volkswagen UK is also reapplying for eligibility under the government’s Electric Car Grant following these technical updates, with confirmation expected at a later date.
