BYD Reaches 16 Million NEV Production Milestone In Record Time

Chinese EV giant BYD has reached another major production milestone, with its 16 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) rolling off the assembly line.

The landmark model is the first unit of the second-generation Denza D9, signaling both scale and technological progress for one of the world’s fastest-growing automakers.

The latest achievement comes just 120 days after BYD produced its 15 millionth NEV in December 2025, underlining the company’s rapid manufacturing acceleration—even as overall growth begins to stabilize in a more competitive global EV market.

Denza D9: A Flagship MPV with Cutting-Edge Tech

The second-generation Denza D9 officially entered pre-sales on March 29, with six trim levels available. Pricing ranges from 389,800 yuan to 489,800 yuan (approximately $57,000–$71,000), with both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) variants offered under a unified pricing structure.

At the heart of the new model is BYD’s latest battery innovation. The MPV is equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery, paired with next-generation fast-charging capabilities. According to the company, the system can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, while reaching 97% state of charge takes only nine minutes—figures that position the D9 among the fastest-charging EVs currently announced.

The model also comes standard with BYD’s advanced God’s Eye 5.0 driver assistance system. Designed to enhance both business and family travel, the suite integrates the latest smart driving features, reflecting the brand’s push into higher-end, tech-focused segments. Notably, BYD plans to roll out this system to older Denza D9 models, provided they are equipped with compatible hardware.

From Slow Beginnings to Breakneck Growth

BYD’s rise in the electric vehicle sector has been nothing short of remarkable. The company produced its first NEV back in 2008 but didn’t reach its one millionth unit until May 2021. Since then, production has surged at an unprecedented rate.

The jump from 10 million to 15 million vehicles took just 13 months, with the 10 million milestone recorded in November 2024. Now, reaching 16 million only months later highlights how BYD has scaled both manufacturing and demand to compete globally.

While growth has moderated slightly in 2026, the company’s consistent milestones reinforce its dominant position in the EV market—particularly in China, where competition continues to intensify.

A Defining Moment for BYD’s Global Ambitions

The 16 millionth NEV milestone is more than just a production figure. It reflects BYD’s ability to combine scale, affordability, and rapid technological development—key factors driving its expansion beyond China into Europe and other global markets.

With models like the Denza D9 pushing the boundaries of charging speed and in-car technology, BYD is clearly aiming to strengthen its presence in premium segments while maintaining its high-volume advantage.

As the EV market evolves, BYD’s pace suggests it will remain a central player shaping the next phase of electric mobility.
