Volkswagen ID.UNYX 08 Enters Production in China with XPENG Tech. First car developed jointly by Volkswagen and XPENG rolls off the production line.

The Volkswagen Group is accelerating its electrification strategy in China with the start of series production for the new Volkswagen ID.UNYX 08. Built in Hefei, eastern China, the fully electric SUV marks a major milestone in the company’s “In China, for China” strategy and reflects the brand’s growing focus on localized innovation for the world’s largest EV market.

Developed jointly with Chinese EV manufacturer XPENG, the ID.UNYX 08 reached production readiness just 24 months after the partnership began, highlighting the rapid development pace now driving China’s electric vehicle sector.

The model is expected to launch in the Chinese market in the first half of this year.

Built for China’s High-Tech EV Market

The ID.UNYX 08 is designed as a fully connected, all-electric full-size SUV, equipped with technologies tailored to Chinese consumers.

Key highlights include:

– 800-volt ultra-fast charging system
– Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
– Over-the-air (OTA) software updates
– Advanced connectivity features and digital services

Despite its locally developed technology stack, Volkswagen says the SUV still reflects its traditional strengths in safety, quality, driving comfort, and durability.

A Rapid Development Cycle

The ID.UNYX 08 represents the first tangible result of the strategic partnership between Volkswagen and XPENG. The collaboration focuses on joint product development and technological innovation, combining Volkswagen’s global engineering expertise with XPENG’s EV and software capabilities.

According to Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume, the new SUV demonstrates how quickly the company’s China strategy is progressing.

“Three years ago, we launched our strong China strategy – it is now unleashing its full power,” Blume said. “The ID.UNYX 08 is a clear example of a vehicle developed in China for China, combining German engineering with local cutting-edge technology.”

“China Speed” Development

Ralf Brandstätter emphasized the rapid rollout of new electric vehicles as the company accelerates its product offensive in China.

Volkswagen plans to introduce around 20 new locally developed EV models in China this year, which translates to roughly one new electric vehicle every two weeks.

Brandstätter described the pace as “China Speed,” noting that the ID.UNYX 08 represents a new generation of smart electric vehicles tailored specifically for Chinese buyers.

Joint Engineering with XPENG

The cooperation also extends beyond the vehicle itself. Volkswagen, XPENG, and the Group’s Chinese software arm CARIAD jointly developed a new China Electronic Architecture (CEA).

This zonal electrical architecture will underpin future models built for the Chinese market, supporting both new-energy vehicles (NEVs) and conventional powertrains.

The first vehicle based on the CEA platform is expected to debut later this year.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen China Technology Company (VCTC) oversaw key elements of the ID.UNYX 08’s development, including product design definition, technical validation and release, quality standards and driving dynamics tuning.

This ensures the SUV maintains Volkswagen’s traditional driving characteristics and safety benchmarks.

A Major EV Push Toward 2030

The ID.UNYX 08 also kicks off Volkswagen’s largest electric vehicle product campaign in China to date.

Following a strategic shift into what the company calls “Delivery Mode”, Volkswagen plans to significantly expand its EV lineup in the coming years:

– 20+ new NEV models launching in 2026
– 50 new NEV models planned by 2030

By strengthening local research and development capabilities and expanding partnerships with Chinese tech and EV companies, Volkswagen aims to remain the leading international automaker in China while playing a key role in the country’s rapidly evolving intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) era.
