The new Smart #6 EHD plug-in hybrid sedan revealed

Smart has pulled the covers off the new Smart #6, a sleek plug-in hybrid sedan that now stands as the brand’s largest model yet. Not only is the #6 Smart’s first sedan, but it’s also just the company’s second PHEV, following the hybrid version of the #5 SUV introduced in China earlier this year. A fully electric #6 is already confirmed for launch next year.

Badged EHD (Electric Hybrid Drive), the #6 PHEV joins the #1, #3 and #5 SUVs in Smart’s expanding line-up. And while it marks a clear departure from the tiny city cars that once defined the brand, Smart says the newcomer still maintains signature design cues such as compact overhangs and a clean, aero-optimised silhouette.

The interior hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s expected to follow the design direction of the larger #5, featuring a 13-inch central touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital driver display.

In terms of size, the #6 is surprisingly substantial. At 4906mm long, 1922mm wide and 1508mm tall, with a 2926mm wheelbase, it’s similar in footprint to the Zeekr 07 and becomes not only the biggest Smart ever but also one of the longest cars built on Geely’s PMA2+ platform. Its dimensions place it squarely in the Chinese saloon segment dominated by BYD models.

Under the skin, the #6 PHEV shares its plug-in hybrid drivetrain with the recently launched #5 EHD SUV, which means pairing a 161hp 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder with an electric motor and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Combined output peaks at up to 429hp. A lithium-iron-phosphate battery from SVOLT and CATL delivers a claimed 177 miles (275 km) of electric-only range on the CLTC cycle, with a total range of 1125 miles (1810 km) and fuel economy of 72.4mpg. The PMA2 platform also supports both 400V and 800V systems and ultra-fast DC charging up to 400kW.

The fully electric #6, due next year in China, will offer either a 75kWh LFP battery or a 94kWh NMC pack. Rear-wheel-drive models form the core of the range:

– The #6 Pro runs on a 400V system, producing 340hp with the 75kWh battery.
– The #6 Pro+ upgrades to an 800V architecture, 94kWh battery and a 363hp motor—a setup shared with the #6 Premium.

Above these sit two dual-motor, four-wheel-drive variants: the #6 Pulse with 588hp, and the flagship #6 Brabus boasting 646hp, both using the 94kWh battery.
