Volvo is set to redefine electric vehicle performance with the upcoming ES90, a fully electric model showcasing the brand’s new 800V technology. This advancement promises to deliver significant improvements in charging speed, overall performance, and system efficiency compared to traditional 400V systems.
The implementation of an 800V architecture enables the ES90 to achieve remarkable charging capabilities. At 350kW fast-charging stations, the vehicle can add up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) of range in just 10 minutes, significantly reducing downtime during long journeys. Moreover, the ES90 boasts a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 700 kilometers (435 miles), offering drivers extended freedom and peace of mind.
Central to these advancements is a complete overhaul of the electric system, with every component, including the battery cells, e-motors, inverter, and thermal management systems, optimized for 800V operation. This high-voltage approach allows for greater power delivery and range with reduced current, resulting in less heat generation and faster charging speeds.
Furthermore, the ES90 incorporates lighter e-motors and components, contributing to a reduction in overall vehicle weight and enhancing system efficiency. This translates to improved acceleration and extended driving range.
Volvo’s commitment to innovation extends to battery management software. The brand’s in-house-developed software, enhanced by adaptive charging technology from Breathe Battery Technologies, reduces the 10 to 80 percent charging time by up to 30 percent, bringing it down to a mere 20 minutes.
“Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification,” states Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo. “It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster and go farther on a single charge.”
Beyond performance, the ES90 emphasizes sustainability. The vehicle incorporates a significant proportion of recycled and bio-based materials, contributing to a lower carbon footprint during production. Notably, 29 percent of the aluminum and 18 percent of the steel used in the ES90 are recycled, along with 16 percent recycled polymers and bio-based materials. The interior features FSC-certified wood panels, reinforcing Volvo’s commitment to responsible sourcing.
Transparency is also a priority. The ES90 includes a battery passport, utilizing blockchain technology to trace the origins of raw materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite. This passport provides detailed information about the battery’s CO2 footprint and supply chain, empowering customers with greater knowledge about the vehicle’s environmental impact.
The ES90 is designed to deliver a premium driving experience, focusing on quality time, peace of mind, and convenience. With its state-of-the-art 800V electric system, the ES90 aims to set a new standard for electric vehicle performance and sustainability, ensuring a reliable and comfortable journey for all passengers.
The ES90 will be revealed to the world on March 5.
