EVgo and Virginia start construction of statewide EV charging network

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) joined together with EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast charging network for electric vehicles, for the first groundbreaking under the nation’s first statewide EV charging network deployed through the Appendix D Volkswagen settlement funding.

EVgo was awarded the contract by DEQ to develop a statewide public fast-charging network in August 2018. The network prioritizes areas that have high current and projected growing demand for EV charging and is designed to complement existing charging stations and other planned charging infrastructure deployments.

The project is now shifting into construction at the convenient Pike 7 Plaza location; when open, the location will include a total of two 50 kW EVgo fast chargers capable of delivering up to 90 miles of range in 30 minutes.

“The Commonwealth is committed to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles as a key part of our fight against climate change and to curb tailpipe pollution,” said Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources, Matthew J. Strickler. “Today’s groundbreaking with EVgo is an important next step in the strategic investment of our Volkswagen settlement funding which will connect EV drivers across Virginia to critical fast charging infrastructure.”

“EVgo is proud to partner with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality on this significant deployment of electric vehicle charging stations across the Commonwealth under our competitively bid contract,” said Marcy Bauer, Director of Program Operations at EVgo. “We are excited to begin construction at Pike 7 Plaza to enable the residents of Vienna and other Northern Virginia communities with access to convenient and reliable EVgo fast charging.”

“Federal Realty is committed to creating a positive impact for our community, employees, investors, tenants and the environment,” said Ron Becker, Vice President of National Operations and Sustainability, Federal Realty Investment Trust. “We are pleased to increase the appeal of Pike 7 Plaza as a preferred destination for EV customers in Vienna, by providing the convenience of EVgo fast charging to our customers.”
