The upcoming smart #2 is already generating strong demand in Europe, with its exclusive Couture Edition selling out just two weeks after pre-orders opened. Limited to 999 units, the special edition of the all-electric two-seater was fully reserved across the European markets where it was offered, even before most potential buyers had the opportunity to see the vehicle in person.
The announcement marks an encouraging start for smart’s return to the compact electric city car segment. The new smart #2 is designed as the spiritual successor to the popular smart Fortwo, bringing back the brand’s original two-seat urban concept in a fully electric package.
According to smart Europe, the Early Order programme opened on October 13, 2026, shortly after the vehicle’s world premiere at the Paris Motor Show. By October 29, all available units of the limited smart #2 Couture Edition had been sold.
The strong response is particularly notable because the Paris Motor Show remains the only opportunity for European customers to experience the production vehicle in person so far.
Smart #2 Couture Edition: 999 Units Sold Out Before Launch
The smart #2 Couture Edition was created as a more exclusive version of the upcoming electric city car. Production for the European launch is limited to 999 units, giving it a distinctive position within the model lineup.
Its exterior features an Atelier White Matte finish combined with a Platinum Gold roof. The special edition also receives 16-inch Lyra alloy wheels with gold detailing, creating a more premium appearance than the standard versions.
Inside, the Couture Edition comes with the full Premium specification as standard. Equipment includes a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a Sennheiser sound system, wireless smartphone charging and navigation.
According to German publication electrive, the special edition starts at €25,690, positioning it above the regular smart #2 lineup.
The limited production run and exclusive styling appear to have helped generate considerable interest before the vehicle reaches dealerships.
Smart Returns to Its Two-Seater Electric Car Roots
The launch of the smart #2 represents an important return to the company’s original identity.
In recent years, smart has expanded into larger electric vehicles, including the smart #1, smart #3 and smart #5. While these models target customers looking for more space and versatility, the new #2 brings back the compact two-seat format that made the brand recognizable in European cities.
Developed through the Mercedes-Benz and Geely joint venture, the smart #2 is built around the company’s new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA).
The vehicle measures approximately 2.75 metres in length, 1.76 metres in width and 1.56 metres in height. Its compact dimensions are designed to make parking and navigating narrow urban streets easier.
One of its standout features is a turning circle of just 6.95 metres. The familiar wheels-at-the-corners layout also helps maximize interior space despite the car’s small exterior footprint.
Despite its compact size, the smart #2 offers 305 litres of luggage capacity behind the two seats, according to the technical information reported by electrive.
Smart #2 Range, Battery and Charging Details
The new electric two-seater is expected to offer a WLTP driving range of up to 290 kilometres.
Power comes from a 35.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL. The rear-mounted electric motor produces 60 kW (82 horsepower) and 130 Nm of torque, with a top speed of 140 km/h.
These specifications position the smart #2 primarily as an urban electric vehicle rather than a long-distance highway car.
Charging capability is another important part of the package. All versions support DC fast charging at up to 65 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in less than 20 minutes under suitable conditions.
AC charging capacity varies by trim. The entry-level Pure version supports up to 7.4 kW, while higher-specification models offer up to 11 kW.
Smart lists a preliminary combined WLTP energy consumption figure of 13.6 kWh per 100 kilometres. The manufacturer notes that the vehicle is still undergoing the European homologation process, meaning final technical specifications and figures may change.
Smart #2 Prices and European Delivery Timeline
Although the exclusive Couture Edition has sold out in the European markets where it was initially offered, customers can still place early orders for the regular smart #2 models.
The lineup includes three standard versions: smart #2 Pure, smart #2 Pure+ and smart #2 Premium.
Prices start at €19,990 in several European markets, including Germany, France and Italy. Pricing may vary depending on the country and local market conditions.
The first customer deliveries are planned for the middle of the second quarter of 2027.
Right-hand-drive versions, intended for markets such as the United Kingdom, are expected to be offered during 2027. Smart has also indicated that the Couture Edition will be available in right-hand-drive form.
The company has not yet completed the vehicle’s European homologation process, so final specifications and delivery details remain subject to confirmation.
