The Kia EV4 has earned a five-star sustainability rating from Green NCAP, achieving an impressive overall score of 90%. The result makes Kia’s first dedicated all-electric sedan the highest-scoring vehicle among the seven models evaluated in Green NCAP’s latest assessment round.
Tested in Earth trim with an 81.4 kWh battery, the EV4 delivered strong results across all three environmental performance categories: Greenhouse Gases, Energy Efficiency, and Clean Air. Its performance highlights Kia’s efforts to combine long-range electric driving with lower environmental impact and everyday practicality.
Green NCAP also praised the EV4’s efficient powertrain, European manufacturing location, and charging technology, identifying several factors that contributed to its strong sustainability performance.
The Kia EV4 recorded consistently high scores in Green NCAP’s three main environmental assessment categories.
Its results were:
– Greenhouse Gases: 9.5 out of 10
– Energy Efficiency: 8.9 out of 10
– Clean Air: 8.8 out of 10
With a combined sustainability score of 90%, the EV4 finished ahead of all other vehicles assessed in the latest testing round, which included electric, hybrid, gasoline, and diesel models.
According to Green NCAP, the EV4 successfully brings long-range electric vehicle technology into the mainstream family-car segment while delivering excellent efficiency under different driving conditions.
One of the key factors behind the EV4’s high rating is its relatively low energy consumption.
During summer on-road testing, Green NCAP recorded electricity consumption of just 13.9 kWh per 100 kilometers. This result demonstrates the importance of powertrain efficiency in maximizing driving range while reducing the electricity required for everyday journeys.
The assessment also considered the vehicle’s performance under different testing conditions, rather than relying exclusively on laboratory figures.
Another important factor was the EV4’s European production location. The tested model is manufactured in Slovakia, and Green NCAP included European production parameters in its lifecycle assessment.
The relatively clean electricity mix used in the regional production calculation helped improve the vehicle’s overall environmental results.
Green NCAP also examined the EV4’s charging capabilities and battery-management features.
The electric sedan includes both manual and automatic battery preconditioning, allowing the battery to reach a more suitable temperature for charging. This feature can help optimize charging performance, particularly when preparing for DC fast charging in colder conditions.
During the assessment, Green NCAP reported DC fast-charging power of up to 130 kW. Charging power gradually decreases toward the end of the charging session, helping protect battery health and manage the charging process.
The EV4 also supports bidirectional charging capabilities, adding another layer of versatility to its electric platform.
Together, these features contribute to the EV4’s everyday usability, particularly for drivers who regularly rely on public charging infrastructure or want more flexibility from their electric vehicle.
The five-star result represents independent recognition of the Kia EV4’s environmental performance, extending beyond its zero-tailpipe-emission operation.
Green NCAP’s assessment considers several aspects of vehicle sustainability, including energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, and environmental impact throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.
For Kia, the result reinforces the company’s strategy of developing electric vehicles that combine efficiency, practical driving range, and lower environmental impact.
The achievement also strengthens the EV4’s position in the increasingly competitive electric family-car market, where efficiency and sustainability are becoming important considerations alongside price, range, and charging speed.
Green NCAP is an independent vehicle assessment program that evaluates the environmental performance of new cars using laboratory and real-world testing.
Its assessments focus on three main areas: Clean Air, Energy Efficiency, and Greenhouse Gases. The broader Sustainability Rating also considers the environmental impact associated with a vehicle throughout its lifecycle.
Testing goes beyond measuring electricity or fuel consumption. It also examines practical aspects of vehicle performance, including driving range, charging behavior, and operation in colder temperatures.
This approach provides a broader picture of how vehicles perform in everyday conditions and how their environmental impact compares with competing models.
In the latest assessment round, seven vehicles with different powertrain technologies were evaluated. The Kia EV4 achieved the highest overall sustainability score, demonstrating that an efficient electric powertrain combined with European production can deliver strong results across multiple environmental categories.
With its five-star Green NCAP rating and 90% overall score, the Kia EV4 has established itself as one of the strongest performers in the latest sustainability assessments, adding another important achievement to Kia’s expanding electric vehicle lineup.
