GM EV Buyers in California Can Get a Free Home Charger and Smart-Charging Savings

General Motors is giving some California EV buyers another incentive to go electric. Through a new partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), eligible customers purchasing or leasing a new Chevrolet, GMC or Cadillac EV can receive a GM Energy home charger at no additional hardware cost while also gaining access to smart-charging incentives.

The new GM Energy Smart Charge Bundle is available to eligible PG&E residential customers in Northern and Central California. The program combines the home charger offer with PG&E’s EV Charge Manager program, allowing participating EV owners to potentially reduce charging costs while helping limit electricity demand during peak periods.

The initiative is designed to make home charging part of the EV purchase process rather than something customers have to figure out after taking delivery of their vehicle.

Free GM Energy Home Charger for Eligible EV Buyers

Customers who qualify for the program can choose between a GM Energy PowerShift Charger and a PowerUp 2 charger at no additional hardware cost. Depending on the charger and purchase or lease path, the equipment represents a value of up to $1,999.

The PowerUp 2 provides Level 2 home charging, while the PowerShift Charger can work with compatible GM Energy equipment and vehicles to enable bidirectional charging. With the necessary home equipment and grid interconnection, bidirectional charging can allow electricity to flow from the vehicle back to the home during an outage and could support future vehicle-to-grid applications.

The charger itself is included, but customers are responsible for installation, permitting and any electrical work required at the home.

Installation must be completed through GM Energy’s preferred installer network. Electrum currently offers a standard installation package priced at $1,499, covering permitting and up to 35 feet of conduit and conductor. Additional work, such as trenching or electrical panel upgrades, can increase the total installation cost.

Smart Charging Could Cut EV Charging Costs

The charger incentive is only part of the new program. Once enrolled, qualifying customers can participate in PG&E’s EV Charge Manager program and receive a $15 monthly bill credit, while potentially saving up to another $50 per month by shifting EV charging to periods when electricity costs and grid demand are lower.

Actual savings will vary depending on electricity rates, charging habits and the applicable program terms.

The system uses managed charging, meaning charging can automatically be scheduled around the needs of the electric grid. GM, PG&E and energy software company WeaveGrid use connected charging technology to coordinate when an EV charges.

For example, charging may be shifted away from periods of high electricity demand and toward lower-cost periods. Customers are not locked into the schedule, however, and can override managed charging when they need their vehicle charged immediately.

That flexibility is important for EV owners who may occasionally need to charge outside the scheduled window.

What EV Buyers Need to Qualify?

The Smart Charge Bundle is not available to every GM EV buyer. The program is currently limited to eligible PG&E residential customers in Northern and Central California who purchase or lease a new Chevrolet, GMC or Cadillac EV through a participating dealership.

The offer is expected to remain available through February 2027 or until the program reaches its capacity, whichever comes first.

Customers must also live in a qualifying single-family or detached residence and have the authority to install a home EV charger. They must complete the required PG&E program enrollment and agree to the applicable terms.

An active OnStar service plan with location services enabled is also required. New GM vehicles include eight years of OnStar service, although customers still need to meet the program’s other requirements.

Participants cannot already be enrolled in another qualifying smart-charging or demand-response program.

Because the program has limited capacity, GM and PG&E recommend confirming eligibility and availability with a participating dealer before purchasing or leasing an EV.

Why Managed Charging Matters

Smart charging is becoming an increasingly important part of EV ownership as the number of electric vehicles on the road grows.

Instead of having thousands of EVs begin charging at the same time, managed charging can spread electricity demand across different periods. That can help utilities reduce localized pressure on the grid while giving EV owners an opportunity to charge when electricity is less expensive.

WeaveGrid provides the software technology supporting the GM and PG&E program. The same type of technology can also be used in other markets to help GM EV owners schedule charging around electricity prices without requiring them to constantly monitor rates.

For GM, the California program also provides an opportunity to bring vehicle charging, utility incentives and energy management together at the dealership.

GM Energy Vice President Wade Sheffer said the company’s goal is to make EV ownership easier by reducing the number of steps customers need to take to set up charging and understand available energy benefits.

PG&E also sees the program as part of a broader effort to connect EV adoption with a more flexible and efficient electricity system.

GM and PG&E have previously established a goal of having up to 52,000 EVs interacting with the grid by 2030. Programs such as the Smart Charge Bundle could help expand the role of EVs beyond transportation by allowing vehicles and home charging equipment to become increasingly integrated with the energy system.

For California EV shoppers who qualify, the new program brings together three of the biggest considerations when buying an electric vehicle: home charging equipment, charging costs and grid-friendly charging. While installation expenses remain the customer’s responsibility, the combination of a potentially $1,999 charger value and ongoing smart-charging incentives could significantly change the economics of home charging for eligible GM EV buyers.
