
Mercedes-Benz has officially started series production of the new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA at its Rastatt plant in Germany, marking another important step in the automaker’s transition toward a more flexible, software-driven vehicle lineup.
Production of the all-electric GLA is already fully underway, while hybrid versions featuring 48-volt technology and a new-generation internal-combustion engine are scheduled to follow later in 2026.
The new GLA joins several other models from Mercedes-Benz’s latest vehicle generation being produced at Rastatt, reinforcing the German factory’s role as a major production center for the company’s compact vehicles.
Electric and Hybrid GLA Models Share the Same Production Line
One of the key features of the Rastatt plant is its ability to manufacture vehicles with different powertrain technologies on the same production infrastructure.
The factory can build fully electric, hybrid and conventional vehicles on a flexible production line. For Mercedes-Benz, this approach makes it easier to adjust production according to demand across different global markets.
The new GLA is currently being assembled in Assembly Hall 4.0. Mercedes-Benz is investing a low three-digit million-euro amount to transform the neighboring Assembly Hall 4.1, where production of the GLA is scheduled to move in 2027.
Digital twins are being used to plan and optimize the upgraded production facility. Mercedes-Benz says high-precision digital simulations can reduce both construction time and costs by allowing production processes and equipment to be tested virtually before physical installation.
The technology previously helped the automaker complete the conversion of Hall 4.0 in 2023 in a record time.
MB.OS Brings Software Deeper Into GLA Production
Software is another major part of the new GLA manufacturing process.
Mercedes-Benz is integrating its MB.OS operating system, artificial intelligence and the company’s MO360 digital production ecosystem into the manufacturing process.
MB.OS uses a chip-to-cloud architecture in which vehicle software can be transmitted through a central server in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud rather than being distributed across numerous individual hardware modules.
This approach allows vehicles to leave the factory with the latest software and provides Mercedes-Benz with greater flexibility in managing vehicle functions through software.
The integration of digital technologies reflects the broader shift in the automotive industry toward software-defined vehicles, where software is becoming increasingly important to the ownership experience as well as the manufacturing process.
Mercedes-Benz Builds Key GLA EV Components in Germany
The electric GLA also relies on a wider Mercedes-Benz manufacturing network across Germany.
Electric drive units and axles for the new GLA are produced at the company’s Untertürkheim operations, including facilities in Mettingen and Hedelfingen. The electric drive system combines the motor, power electronics and transmission components needed to transfer power to the wheels.
Mettingen is responsible for assembling the complete electric axles, which are then delivered to Rastatt for vehicle production.
The GLA’s high-voltage batteries come from Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Accumotive in Kamenz, Saxony. The company has more than a decade of experience producing high-voltage battery systems and serves as one of Mercedes-Benz’s battery-production centers.
Meanwhile, the nearby Kuppenheim site supplies body-in-white components, structural parts and other body components to the Rastatt plant. The two sites have been more closely integrated organizationally since early 2026.
New Mercedes-Benz GLA Focuses on Everyday Usability
Beyond its production technology, the new GLA receives a substantial redesign aimed at making the compact SUV more practical, comfortable and technologically advanced.
The new model features a lower silhouette, longer wheelbase and illuminated grille, giving it a sportier appearance than its predecessor. Mercedes-Benz has also completely redesigned the interior.
A panoramic roof, large MBUX Superscreen and upgraded materials are among the interior highlights, while the increased space and improved versatility are intended to strengthen the GLA’s everyday usability.
The latest generation also brings Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX Virtual Assistant with generative AI, allowing drivers to interact with the vehicle using more natural language and receive personalized assistance.
For the electric GLA, the combination of a dedicated electric powertrain, advanced software and a production system capable of handling multiple drivetrain technologies represents an important part of Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation compact EV strategy.
Rastatt Becomes an Important Hub for Mercedes-Benz’s New EV Generation
The Rastatt plant has been operating since 1992 and employs around 7,000 people, making it one of the region’s largest employers.
Its ability to produce multiple types of powertrains on the same production infrastructure gives Mercedes-Benz additional flexibility as consumer demand shifts between electric vehicles, hybrids and combustion-powered models.
The start of GLA production therefore represents more than the arrival of a new compact SUV. It also demonstrates how Mercedes-Benz is reshaping its German manufacturing network around electrification, software and flexible production.
With the electric GLA already entering series production and hybrid versions following later this year, the Rastatt plant is set to play a significant role in the next phase of Mercedes-Benz’s compact vehicle lineup.
