
Lucid Motors is expanding its autonomous-driving ambitions into Europe through a new partnership with Bolt, with plans to develop and deploy at least 25,000 fully autonomous Lucid electric vehicles across European cities.
The companies announced the strategic partnership on September 17, 2026, saying they will work together to develop autonomous mobility services designed specifically for European roads, regulations and operating conditions. The vehicles will be based on Lucid’s upcoming Midsize platform and are being developed for SAE Level 4 autonomous driving.
For Bolt, the agreement represents another step toward its much larger goal of having 100,000 autonomous vehicles on its platform by 2035.
Lucid and Bolt Target Large-Scale Robotaxi Deployment
The partnership combines Lucid’s software-defined vehicle technology with Bolt’s mobility data, operating infrastructure and experience running transportation services across Europe.
Bolt says it operates in more than 850 cities across more than 50 countries, giving the company a substantial operating network for future autonomous services. Its dedicated Bolt Autonomous Driving Solutions division will lead the mobility side of the program, from vehicle requirements and safety specifications to fleet infrastructure and city partnerships.
Bolt also intends to own and operate the autonomous fleet.
Lucid will contribute the vehicle platform and its expertise in artificial intelligence, advanced driver-assistance systems and vehicle software. The automaker recently established Lucid Technologies, bringing those technology areas together under a single organization.
The companies will work with additional autonomous-driving technology partners as well as European regulators and policymakers before commercial deployment.
Lucid Midsize EV Platform at the Center of the Deal
The planned autonomous vehicles will use Lucid’s upcoming Midsize platform, which is expected to underpin the company’s next generation of more affordable electric vehicles.
The platform is being developed as an autonomous-driving-system-ready vehicle from the beginning rather than adapting an existing consumer EV for robotaxi use later.
Lucid and Bolt expect the vehicles to use NVIDIA Hyperion, a production-oriented autonomous vehicle architecture that combines high-performance computing with a standardized sensor suite. Hyperion provides key hardware and sensing infrastructure, but the announcement does not identify the autonomous-driving software provider that will ultimately deliver the Level 4 driving capability.
That distinction is important. The partnership establishes the vehicle platform and operating framework, but the companies have not yet disclosed all of the technology partners that will be responsible for turning the vehicles into fully autonomous robotaxis.
No Deployment Timeline Has Been Announced
Despite the 25,000-vehicle target, Lucid and Bolt have not announced a specific date for the first European robotaxis to enter commercial service.
The timing is also linked to Lucid’s Midsize program, which has experienced delays. In August, Lucid said its Midsize vehicle program would launch in the second half of 2027, after the company announced an operational reset focused on reducing costs and improving execution.
Lucid said in August that Midsize development was continuing, with prototype vehicles and Atlas drive units progressing through validation and production-readiness activities. Its Saudi Arabian manufacturing facility is also being prepared for future production.
That means the Bolt autonomous fleet remains a future deployment rather than an immediate robotaxi launch.
Lucid’s Growing Robotaxi Strategy
The Bolt agreement is also significant because it gives Lucid a second major autonomous-mobility program.
Lucid has already been working with Uber and autonomous-driving company Nuro on robotaxi vehicles for the U.S. market. That program centers on Lucid’s Gravity SUV and is separate from the Bolt partnership. Reuters reports that Uber has committed to at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles under its broader autonomous-vehicle agreement.
The European and U.S. programs take different approaches. The Bolt partnership is centered on Lucid’s upcoming Midsize platform and NVIDIA Hyperion, while the Uber program involves the Gravity and Nuro’s autonomous-driving technology.
For Lucid, the two agreements demonstrate how autonomous mobility could become an important part of its future business beyond selling EVs directly to consumers.
Europe Presents a Different Robotaxi Challenge
Deploying thousands of autonomous vehicles across Europe will require more than producing the cars.
European countries have different regulatory frameworks, road environments and requirements for autonomous driving. Bolt CEO Markus Villig has highlighted Europe’s stricter safety regulations as one of the major challenges for large-scale autonomous mobility.
The companies therefore plan to work with European regulators and policymakers alongside technology partners to support the development and deployment of Level 4 autonomous services.
Under SAE Level 4, a vehicle can perform the entire driving task without human intervention within defined operating conditions and areas. That makes the planned Bolt vehicles fundamentally different from today’s driver-assistance systems, which still require a human driver to remain responsible for the vehicle.
