New Renault Trafic Van E-Tech Electric Brings 470 Km Range and 800V Charging

Renault is taking its electric commercial vehicle strategy to the next level with the new Trafic Van E-Tech electric, unveiled as part of the company’s LCV offensive at the 2026 IAA Transportation show in Hanover.

The new electric van is one of five new LCV models Renault plans to introduce between now and 2028. It combines a claimed range of more than 470 km, 800V fast-charging technology, a software-defined vehicle architecture and the practical capabilities expected from a modern medium-sized van.

With more than 2.8 million Trafic vans sold since the nameplate was introduced in 1980, the new electric model represents an important step in Renault’s transition toward zero-emission commercial vehicles.

Renault Trafic Van E-Tech Electric: 470 Km of Range

Range and charging speed are particularly important for commercial vehicles because downtime directly affects business productivity.

The new Trafic Van E-Tech electric is designed to address both concerns. Renault says the van can travel more than 470 km on a single charge, although WLTP homologation is still pending.

In urban driving, the claimed range can reach nearly 690 km, according to Renault, potentially allowing operators to work for up to five days without needing to recharge.

Power comes from an 81 kWh battery, while the van uses Renault Group’s new RGEV medium-van platform and an 800V electrical architecture.

Fast charging is one of the vehicle’s key advantages. Renault says the Trafic Van E-Tech electric can recover up to 280 km of range in 20 minutes, or as much as 380 km in city driving over the same charging period.

Renault estimates that the electric Trafic can deliver a total cost of ownership up to 10% lower than an equivalent internal-combustion model.

Designed for Urban Commercial Use

Although the Trafic Van E-Tech electric is built for business users, Renault has also focused heavily on driving comfort and manoeuvrability.

The van has a 10.3-meter turning circle, with handling agility that Renault says is comparable to the Clio. At just 1.89 meters tall, it can also access standard underground parking facilities.

A multi-link rear suspension, ergonomic driving position, improved visibility and the quiet operation of an electric powertrain are intended to make the van more comfortable during long working days.

A Software-Defined Electric Van

One of the most significant technological changes is hidden beneath the Trafic’s conventional van body.

The new model is the first Renault Group vehicle and the first LCV in Europe to use a software-defined vehicle architecture, according to Renault.

The system replaces 80 electronic control units with just two supercomputers. These run Renault’s CAR OS, an Android-based operating system developed in partnership with Google.

The architecture is designed to allow the van to receive regular software updates, introduce new functions over its lifetime and provide more personalised vehicle operation.

Renault also says the technology can support predictive maintenance and potentially improve residual value by keeping the vehicle technologically up to date.

That approach could be particularly valuable for commercial operators, where vehicle uptime and predictable operating costs are often more important than simply having the latest hardware.

Practical Van Capability Remains a Priority

The shift to electric power has not come at the expense of the Trafic’s traditional commercial-vehicle capabilities.

The new Trafic Van E-Tech electric offers up to 5.8 cubic meters of cargo capacity, a 1.3-tonne payload and up to 2 tonnes of towing capacity.

It can accommodate three Euro pallets and has a load height of 53 cm. A flat floor and 1.30 meters of space between the wheels are also intended to make conversions and cargo loading easier.

The initial range will include a panel van, with the version scheduled for introduction by the end of 2026. Chassis-cab and crew-cab variants are planned for 2027.

V2L and Conversion-Friendly Technology

Renault is also preparing the Trafic Van E-Tech electric for a wide range of commercial applications.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality allows operators to use the van’s battery to power electrical equipment through a socket in the cargo area. This could be useful on construction sites and other locations where access to electrical power is limited.

An electric power take-off, or ePTO, is also planned. Renault says it will allow specialist conversions such as refrigeration units and ambulance equipment to draw electrical power from the vehicle.

The van also introduces Convertor Companion, which allows body converters to integrate controls for specialist equipment directly into the openR link multimedia system rather than requiring a separate display.

Renault Offers Three Levels of Van Conversion

Renault is supporting the Trafic Van E-Tech electric with a broad conversion strategy.

The first level consists of vehicles converted directly by Renault at its LCV plants in Maubeuge, Sandouville and Batilly. These include commonly requested configurations such as crew cabs and high-volume vans.

The second level is handled by Qstomize, a Renault Group-owned conversion specialist. Its work covers applications ranging from workshop vehicles to vehicles designed for people with reduced mobility.

The third level consists of a network of 300 certified body converters across Europe, giving businesses access to more specialised configurations.

Renault Trafic Van E-Tech Electric Targets Lower Emissions

Renault says the new electric Trafic has been designed to reduce its environmental impact throughout its lifecycle, from manufacturing through use and eventual end-of-life management.

According to the company’s lifecycle assessment, the electric van’s carbon footprint is more than 45% lower than that of an equivalent diesel van.

Over a 200,000-km lifecycle assessment, Renault estimates emissions of around 33 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent for the electric Trafic, compared with approximately 63 tonnes for a comparable diesel vehicle. The calculation uses the average European electricity mix.

Efficiency also plays an important role. Renault says the van’s aerodynamic efficiency has improved by 6%, while the electric powertrain has an efficiency exceeding 90%.

The combination of an 81 kWh battery, a claimed 470-km range and controlled vehicle weight is intended to provide a strong balance between usable range and energy consumption.

The Trafic Van E-Tech electric is manufactured at Renault’s Sandouville plant in France using low-carbon energy.

Renault Uptimize Will Focus on Vehicle Uptime

Renault’s electric LCV strategy goes beyond the vehicle itself.

The company plans to introduce Renault uptimize in 2027, a programme designed to increase fleet availability and reduce downtime through connected vehicle data, artificial intelligence and predictive maintenance.

Renault aims to halve vehicle downtime in the event of an incident.

The system will use data from the software-defined vehicle architecture to identify potential problems before they become failures. AI will also help optimise maintenance scheduling by grouping operations together and reducing unnecessary workshop visits.

Fleet managers will have access to information including mileage, energy consumption, route planning, charging, eco-driving and safety scores.

In the event of a problem, Renault uptimize will provide personalised support through Renault’s commercial-vehicle network, including remote diagnostics and priority assistance. The programme will be backed by 400 Renault Pro+ centres across Europe.

Renault also plans an in-vehicle energy and safety control app that can manage settings such as energy use, driving modes and maximum speeds. Businesses will eventually be able to create their own in-vehicle apps tailored to specific operations, including last-mile delivery.
