Volvo is giving its popular electric compact SUV a significant update, bringing sharper styling, more power, improved safety technology and a larger infotainment display to the refreshed Volvo EX40.
The updated EX40 is also adopting a new naming strategy inspired by the smaller EX30. Production is scheduled to begin in November, with the first refreshed models expected to reach customers by the end of 2026. Order books are already open in selected markets.
Originally introduced as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the compact electric SUV was later renamed EX40 as Volvo moved toward its new electric vehicle naming system. The latest update is designed to keep the model competitive alongside newer electric SUVs such as the EX30, EX60 and EX90.
Volvo EX40 Gets New P5 and P8 Powertrain Names
One of the biggest changes is the revised powertrain naming structure.
The previous Single Motor and Twin Motor versions are now identified as P5 Electric, P5 Long Range and P8 Performance AWD. The naming brings the EX40 closer to Volvo’s current electric lineup.
The range-topping P8 Performance AWD also receives a power increase. Maximum output rises from 300 kW to 325 kW, with the front electric motor producing 135 kW and the rear motor delivering 190 kW.
The entry-level P5 Electric benefits from more efficient electric motors as well. Equipped with a 70 kWh battery, it can now deliver up to 477 km of WLTP range, an improvement of 10 km over the previous base EX40.
The P5 Long Range remains the long-distance choice, offering up to 576 km of WLTP range.
A heat pump is now standard across the EX40 range, potentially improving efficiency and cabin heating performance in colder conditions.
Refreshed Volvo EX40 Gets a Sharper Design
Volvo has also redesigned the exterior to give the EX40 a closer visual connection to the company’s latest electric models.
At the front, the familiar Volvo “Thor’s Hammer” headlights have been redesigned and now feature a more futuristic appearance with Matrix LED technology. The front fascia, grille, bumper, bonnet and front wings have also been revised.
The changes give the compact SUV a cleaner appearance while bringing its styling closer to the larger EX60 and EX90.
At the rear, the EX40 receives new LED taillights, an updated tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper.
The overall changes are relatively evolutionary rather than a complete redesign, but they help the EX40 look more consistent with Volvo’s latest generation of electric vehicles.
Larger 11.2-Inch Display and Google Gemini
Inside, the updated EX40 gets one of its most noticeable technology upgrades: a new 11.2-inch central display.
The larger, sharper screen runs an updated user interface designed to reduce the number of taps needed to access frequently used functions. Volvo is also adding new premium upholstery and interior trim options, along with improved cabin illumination.
The wireless phone charger has also been updated, while additional storage and practical interior features continue to emphasize everyday usability.
One of the most interesting technology additions is Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant. Drivers can use natural language to interact with the system, including tasks such as planning journeys, finding places to stop and managing messages while on the move.
As with other modern Volvo models, the EX40 will also receive regular over-the-air software updates. This allows Volvo to add improvements and new features after the vehicle has been delivered.
Volvo EX40 Adds New Safety Technology
Safety remains one of the key areas of the EX40 update.
Volvo has introduced a new software and sensor platform that gives the vehicle a more comprehensive view of its surroundings. The upgraded hardware includes new front and corner radars, a new front camera, rear corner radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras.
The additional sensors support new and improved driver-assistance features.
Automatic emergency steering can help the vehicle steer around an imminent hazard, while an enhanced automatic emergency braking system can intervene when a potential collision is detected.
Another useful addition is Door Opening Alert. The system can warn occupants before they open a door if a cyclist, vehicle or another road user is approaching from behind.
Volvo’s optional Pilot Assist system has also been upgraded. It now includes lane-change assistance and has been refined to provide smoother road-following support, particularly during longer journeys.
The optional 360-degree camera system now offers a 3D view, making parking and low-speed manoeuvres easier to judge.
Volvo EX40 Price and Trim Levels
In Germany, the updated Volvo EX40 starts at €47,490 for the P5 Electric.
The Core trim starts at €50,290, while Plus models begin at €52,990. The Plus Black Edition starts at €54,290.
At the top of the range, Ultra models start at €59,290, while the Ultra Black Edition is priced from €60,590.
The P5 Long Range starts at €53,090, while the range-topping P8 Performance AWD starts at €60,590.

EX40 Continues Volvo’s Electric SUV Push
