Next-Gen BMW iX3 Travels 1,030 km With 5% Battery Left

The next-generation BMW iX3 has delivered another impressive range result ahead of its upcoming launch in China. BMW says a pre-production BMW iX3 50L traveled 1,030.2 kilometers (640 miles) without recharging, arriving at its destination with 5% battery remaining.

The internal test was conducted by BMW EfficientDynamics engineers, who drove the electric SUV from the BMW Shenyang production base to the BMW Beijing R&D Center. The result follows an earlier 805-kilometer real-world range test around Qinghai Lake, giving BMW two long-distance demonstrations of the new iX3’s efficiency.

The next-generation BMW iX3 is scheduled to begin pre-sales at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 21, with additional details expected to be announced soon.

Unlike the previous Qinghai Lake test, which was designed to reflect a demanding real-world driving scenario, the latest test focused on the vehicle’s energy-management capabilities during extended road travel.

BMW engineers simulated the route in advance, taking factors such as vehicle speed, energy consumption and battery status into account before carrying out the drive on public roads.

The result is particularly notable because the BMW iX3 50L has an official CLTC range of 919 kilometers (571 miles). BMW says its internal testing and certification work has demonstrated consistent range performance, while the latest road test shows how the vehicle can perform under carefully controlled long-distance conditions.

As with any range test, the 1,030.2-kilometer result should not be considered a typical everyday driving range. Temperature, speed, road conditions, vehicle load, driving style and climate-control use can all have a significant impact on an EV’s real-world range.

The new iX3 represents a major technological step for BMW, introducing the company’s sixth-generation BMW eDrive electric powertrain technology.

BMW has focused on improving efficiency across the entire vehicle rather than relying solely on a larger battery. The system combines improvements to the electric drive unit, regenerative braking, thermal management, aerodynamics and vehicle weight.

The next-generation iX3 also uses a new high-voltage battery architecture designed specifically for BMW’s upcoming EV generation.

One of the key changes is a cell-to-pack battery design, which integrates battery cells directly into the pack structure. BMW says the approach improves space utilization and energy density while reducing weight and helping optimize the vehicle’s center of gravity.

The electric SUV also uses a global 800-volt electrical architecture and BMW’s intelligent energy-management system. Together with a highly integrated electric drive system, these technologies are designed to improve both efficiency and charging performance.

Another major change comes from the battery cells themselves.

According to BMW, the next-generation iX3 is the first mass-produced model in the Chinese market to use the company’s new large cylindrical battery cells. The 46-mm-diameter cells use a new 9-series high-nickel chemistry and offer approximately 20% greater energy density than the prismatic cells used in BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology.

The large cylindrical cells also feature an all-tab design intended to improve charging and discharging efficiency.

BMW says different battery configurations will be available for the new iX3, allowing customers to select a version that better matches their driving requirements.

The combination of higher-density cells, a new battery-pack structure, an 800-volt platform and more advanced vehicle-level energy management is what enables the new iX3 to deliver its exceptionally long claimed range.

BMW iX3 Range Could Make It a Major EV Competitor

The latest test gives the next-generation BMW iX3 an interesting position in the increasingly competitive premium electric SUV market.

An official 919-kilometer CLTC range already places the iX3 among the longest-range EVs available under China’s testing cycle. Demonstrating more than 1,000 kilometers in a controlled road test further highlights BMW’s focus on efficiency as it transitions to its next generation of electric vehicles.

However, the more important figure for buyers will ultimately be the iX3’s performance under normal driving conditions. The gap between laboratory certification figures and real-world range remains an important consideration for EV shoppers, particularly on long highway journeys.

BMW’s two recent demonstrations—805 kilometers around Qinghai Lake and 1,030.2 kilometers between Shenyang and Beijing—suggest that efficiency is one of the major areas of focus for the new model.
