The all-new Isuzu D-Max EV will be available with a factory-installed solar panel system thanks to a new partnership between Isuzu UK and Genie Insights. The collaboration brings integrated solar technology directly to the production process, giving fleet operators a practical way to improve battery performance and enhance vehicle reliability from day one.
Rather than relying on aftermarket installations, the solar system is fitted before the vehicle reaches customers, creating a seamless factory-integrated solution designed specifically for commercial use.
Solar Technology Designed for Commercial EV Fleets
The Isuzu D-Max EV is the first fully electric pickup available in the UK capable of carrying more than a one-tonne payload while producing zero tailpipe emissions. Fleet buyers can now specify Genie Insights’ solar technology as an optional factory-installed feature.
The system has been engineered to support the vehicle’s electrical systems by maintaining the condition of the 12-volt battery. This is especially valuable for fleets that operate auxiliary equipment or spend extended periods parked, helping reduce battery drain while preserving overall vehicle efficiency and driving range over time.
Because the technology continuously generates power during daylight hours, operators benefit from a low-maintenance solution that requires no changes to daily driving or charging routines.
Proven Through Real-World Fleet Operations
The partnership between Isuzu UK, its importer IM Group, and Genie Insights grew from extensive real-world fleet experience.
The companies first worked together through Network Rail, where diesel-powered Isuzu D-Max pickups were already in service. Genie Insights has since installed its solar systems on approximately 450 commercial vehicles across Network Rail’s fleet over the past two years.
Following successful testing and evaluation with IM Group, growing customer demand encouraged Isuzu UK to make the solar system available as an integrated factory option.
Genie Insights has now supplied nearly 15,000 commercial vehicle solar systems across major UK fleet operators, including British Gas and BT/Openreach, demonstrating increasing industry confidence in solar-assisted fleet technology.
Lightweight Solar Panels Built for EV Performance
The solar solution has been specifically developed for commercial vehicles where weight and efficiency are critical.
Key specifications include:
– 75-watt high-voltage solar panel
– Mounted on the pickup’s load bed roof
– Measures 947mm x 687mm
– Weighs just 2.5kg
– Only 3mm thick
Its compact, lightweight construction minimizes any impact on payload capacity or vehicle efficiency while continuously supplying power to onboard electrical systems.
Optimized for UK Weather Conditions
Unlike conventional solar panels that perform best in direct sunlight, Genie Insights uses CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) technology, allowing the system to generate electricity from daylight rather than requiring bright sunshine.
This enables consistent operation throughout the year, including during winter months and overcast conditions commonly experienced across the UK.
The panel is also designed to perform effectively in partially shaded environments thanks to integrated diodes positioned throughout the panel. According to Genie Insights, the technology has been validated through six consecutive winters of real-world commercial fleet operation.
Manufactured in the UK, the system complies with ECE R10 Type Approval standards, ensuring compatibility and reliability for commercial vehicle applications.
Factory Integration Simplifies Fleet Adoption
By integrating the solar technology during vehicle production instead of after delivery, Isuzu UK offers fleet customers a fully engineered solution that arrives ready for service.
The approach eliminates the need for third-party installations while ensuring the solar system is fully integrated with the vehicle from the outset.
Alan Able, Managing Director of Isuzu UK, said the partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to delivering proven technology that enhances the durability and capability customers expect from the D-Max.
Matt Reeve, Managing Director of Genie Insights, added that factory integration makes it easier for fleets to adopt solar technology while improving 12-volt battery health and providing greater confidence in vehicle reliability, particularly in demanding operating environments.
A Practical Upgrade for Electric Commercial Vehicles
As commercial fleets continue transitioning to electric vehicles, technologies that improve operational reliability are becoming increasingly valuable. The addition of factory-installed solar panels on the Isuzu D-Max EV offers a practical solution for maintaining auxiliary battery health while helping preserve overall vehicle efficiency.
With proven performance across thousands of commercial vehicles already in operation, the partnership between Isuzu UK and Genie Insights represents another step toward smarter, more resilient electric fleet solutions.
