Valeo and Nissan to Launch Smart V1G and V2G EV Charging Solutions in the UK

Valeo and Nissan have announced an agreement to launch a new EV charging offer in Europe, beginning in the United Kingdom. The partnership will introduce smart unidirectional V1G charging and advanced bidirectional V2G charging solutions designed to help Nissan EV drivers reduce energy costs while supporting a more flexible electricity grid.

The rollout marks another step in Nissan’s plan to position electric vehicles as more than transportation. With bidirectional charging, compatible Nissan EVs can become mobile energy assets, storing electricity when demand and prices are low and returning energy when it is needed most.

The first solution is a smart unidirectional AC charging station compliant with the UK’s Electric Vehicles Smart Charge Points, or EVSCP, standard. The V1G charger can respond to grid signals and electricity tariffs, automatically shifting charging to lower-cost periods. This allows drivers to optimize charging expenses without changing how they use their vehicles.

Valeo will also supply an advanced bidirectional AC charging station supporting Vehicle-to-Grid, or V2G, services. The technology enables two-way energy flow between the EV and the grid, allowing electricity stored in a vehicle battery to be exported during periods of high demand.

For eligible Nissan EV owners, the system could offer several benefits. Drivers may charge when electricity prices are lowest, use stored battery energy to power their homes during peak-price periods, or make better use of solar energy generated on-site. By helping balance electricity demand, V2G-equipped EVs could also support the wider integration of renewable energy across the grid.

Valeo said its charging technology will provide the electrification foundation for Nissan’s integrated energy ecosystem. Nissan plans to offer the V2G capability through its Vehicle-to-Everything, or V2X, services, expanding the role of EVs in home energy management and grid flexibility.

The commercial rollout will begin through Nissan’s UK network before expanding to additional European markets.

“This major contract with Nissan represents a decisive step in Valeo’s ambition to shape the future of electric mobility,” said Isabelle D’Ambrosio, Vice President Smart Mobility at Valeo. “By combining Valeo’s technological leadership in bidirectional charging with Nissan’s vision for an integrated energy ecosystem, we are redefining the electric vehicle as a critical asset for the grid.”

Soufiane El Khomri, Nissan Energy Services Director, said the agreement supports Nissan’s goal of turning EVs into energy assets rather than simply mobility products.

“By integrating Valeo’s bidirectional charging technology into our V2X service offer, we are giving our customers in Europe the tools to actively manage their energy, reduce costs, and contribute to grid resilience,” El Khomri said.

As electricity systems become increasingly dependent on renewable generation, smart charging and bidirectional EV technology are expected to play a growing role in balancing supply and demand. The Valeo-Nissan partnership positions the UK as the first market for a broader European charging and energy services expansion.
