The updated Opel Astra lineup arrives with improved efficiency, longer electric driving range, and a broader selection of electrified powertrains.
With upgrades across the fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid variants, Opel is strengthening the Astra’s position in the competitive compact car segment while continuing to offer diesel options for buyers not ready to switch to full electrification.
Opel Astra Electric Now Offers Up to 454 km of Range
The biggest improvement comes with the Opel Astra Electric, which now delivers up to 454 kilometres (282 miles) of WLTP driving range on a single charge. That represents an increase of around 35 kilometres compared to the previous version.
The updated Astra Electric combines a 115 kW (156 hp) electric motor with a 58 kWh battery pack, offering 55 kWh of usable capacity. Opel says aerodynamic refinements and drivetrain optimization helped improve efficiency without sacrificing performance.
The compact EV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds, while the Astra Sports Tourer Electric completes the same sprint in 9.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 170 km/h, and the instant 270 Nm of torque provides responsive acceleration from a standstill.
Charging performance also remains competitive. Using a 100 kW DC fast charger, the battery can charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 32 minutes. Every Astra Electric model also comes standard with an 11 kW three-phase onboard charger for faster AC charging at home or public stations.
Opel has additionally equipped the Astra Electric with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to power or charge external devices such as e-bikes and portable electronics directly from the car’s battery. Battery pre-conditioning has also been added to improve fast-charging efficiency in different weather conditions.
Another notable update is the regenerative braking system, which can now be adjusted through three levels using steering wheel paddles to maximize energy recovery while driving.
Plug-In Hybrid Delivers More Electric Driving Capability
The Opel Astra Plug-in Hybrid has also received substantial upgrades. The revised system now produces a combined 196 hp and 360 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful drivetrain in the Astra lineup.
The setup pairs a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 150 hp with a stronger electric motor delivering up to 125 hp. Power is sent through a new electrified seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
A larger 17 kWh battery pack, with 14 kWh of usable capacity, significantly improves electric-only range. The Astra Plug-in Hybrid can now travel up to 84 kilometres in EV mode under the WLTP cycle, roughly 20 kilometres more than before. In urban driving conditions measured under the EAER City cycle, the range exceeds 100 kilometres.
Performance remains strong despite the efficiency focus. The five-door Astra Plug-in Hybrid reaches 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds, while the Sports Tourer variant follows closely at 7.7 seconds. Top speed is rated at 225 km/h, with purely electric driving possible at speeds up to 135 km/h.
Astra Hybrid Targets Everyday Efficiency
For buyers looking for electrified driving without charging cables, Opel continues to offer the Astra Hybrid. The system combines a 136 hp turbocharged petrol engine with a small electric motor and a six-speed electrified dual-clutch transmission.
The hybrid setup produces a combined 145 hp and uses a compact lithium-ion battery that recharges automatically during driving and braking. Opel says the system is especially efficient in urban environments, where the car can operate electrically for up to 50% of city driving time under certain conditions.
The electric motor supports acceleration and low-speed driving, helping reduce fuel consumption and emissions while improving smoothness in stop-and-go traffic.
Diesel Option Remains Available
Despite the expanded electrified lineup, Opel is still offering a diesel-powered Astra for customers who prioritize long-distance efficiency and traditional combustion technology.
The 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine produces 130 hp and 300 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both the Astra hatchback and Sports Tourer accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 209 km/h.
Opel Expands Customer Choice
With battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and diesel powertrains all available in the same model family, Opel continues to emphasize flexibility for European buyers transitioning toward electrified mobility.
The updated Astra range reflects the brand’s strategy of improving efficiency and extending electric driving capability while still offering multiple drivetrain choices tailored to different customer needs and driving habits.
