Kia is expanding its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) lineup with the introduction of the PV5 WAV Side Entry, a purpose-built wheelchair-accessible electric vehicle designed for urban mobility. The model is set to make its European debut at the Motability Scheme Live exhibition in Birmingham starting May 15, 2026.
The launch signals Kia’s continued push into inclusive electric transport, combining factory-built quality with flexible accessibility solutions tailored for modern cities.
Factory-Built Accessibility with Scalable Production
The PV5 WAV Side Entry is developed under Kia’s ‘Made-In-Plant’ (MIP) conversion strategy. This approach integrates vehicle conversions directly into manufacturing lines or through dedicated conversion centres, ensuring consistent build quality while enabling scalable production for European markets.
Unlike traditional aftermarket conversions, this factory-led process improves durability, safety integration, and overall refinement—key factors for both private users and fleet operators.
Segment-First Side Entry for Urban Convenience
One of the most notable innovations is the side-entry wheelchair access, a first for the small electric van segment. This configuration allows users to board directly from the kerb, making it especially practical in dense urban environments where rear access is often limited.
The system is built around a two-step manual ramp designed to handle different road and pavement conditions. It offers a maximum incline of 13.1 degrees, or 11 degrees when deployed from a standard 150 mm kerb. An integrated floor lighting module further improves visibility during boarding, enhancing safety in low-light conditions.
Inside, the centrally positioned wheelchair space creates a more inclusive cabin layout. Seating configurations include a 2-0-3 setup for standard passenger use, or a 2-0-1 layout that accommodates a wheelchair user. A split-folding third-row seat allows a companion to travel alongside, reinforcing the vehicle’s focus on shared mobility.
Built for Durability and Safety
Kia has reinforced the floor structure of the PV5 WAV to support long-term use under demanding conditions. An integrated wheelchair anchorage system ensures secure positioning during transit, aligning with modern safety expectations for accessible vehicles.
These features make the PV5 WAV suitable not only for private owners but also for taxi operators, shuttle services, and mobility providers seeking reliable, purpose-built electric solutions.
Expanding the PV5 WAV Ecosystem
The PV5 WAV Side Entry is part of Kia’s broader PBV accessibility strategy. Alongside it, GM Coachwork—one of Kia UK’s first approved PBV Conversion Partners—introduces additional rear-entry PV5 WAV conversions.
These include the eChorus, eQuantum, and eNevada variants, each offering distinct accessibility solutions such as fold-flat ramps, powered tailgates, and automatic ramp deployment. Some configurations even support full drive-from-wheelchair capability, highlighting the growing versatility of Kia’s PBV platform.
Together, these models form a comprehensive lineup designed to meet diverse regulatory requirements and user needs across the UK and Europe.
A Strategic Move Toward Inclusive EV Mobility
With the PV5 WAV Side Entry, Kia is addressing a critical gap in the electric vehicle market—accessible, factory-engineered mobility solutions. The combination of innovative design, scalable production, and flexible configurations positions the PV5 as a strong contender in the evolving accessible EV segment.
As cities move toward electrification and inclusive transport systems, vehicles like the PV5 WAV are set to play a key role in ensuring that zero-emission mobility is available to everyone.
