The upcoming BMW i7 is set to take a significant leap forward in electric performance thanks to a strategic collaboration between BMW Group and Rimac Technology.
The partnership focuses on integrating BMW’s latest sixth-generation (Gen6) eDrive technology into its flagship all-electric luxury sedan, promising notable gains in range, efficiency, and charging speed.
Next-Generation Battery Technology
At the core of the new BMW i7 is BMW’s Gen6 high-voltage battery system, built around advanced 4695 cylindrical lithium-ion cells. Compared to the previous Gen5 prismatic cells, the new design delivers approximately 20% higher volumetric energy density. This improvement translates directly into increased driving range without compromising space or weight.
The battery system combines these new cylindrical cells with BMW’s proven Gen5 module architecture, ensuring both performance gains and manufacturing reliability.
Faster Charging, Greater Efficiency
Charging performance is another key area of improvement. The upgraded battery system enables higher charging capacity, significantly reducing charging times. This positions the BMW i7 more competitively within the premium EV segment, where fast-charging capability is becoming a critical factor for buyers.
European Engineering Collaboration
The partnership highlights strong European innovation, with battery production handled at Rimac Technology’s advanced facility in Croatia. The completed battery systems are then shipped to BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany, the exclusive production site for the 7 Series lineup.
Rimac Technology, part of the broader Rimac Group, has evolved from a niche supplier for high-performance hypercars into a Tier 1 supplier capable of supporting large-scale automotive projects. Its expertise in electrification—including battery systems, e-axles, and software—plays a crucial role in this collaboration.
Debut at Auto China 2026
The new BMW i7 will make its global debut at Auto China 2026 in Beijing. The model is expected to showcase how BMW is rapidly deploying its Neue Klasse technologies across its lineup, starting with its flagship electric sedan.
A Step Forward for Premium EVs
With improved energy density, extended range, and faster charging, the updated BMW i7 signals a major step forward in BMW’s electrification strategy. The collaboration with Rimac Technology underscores a broader industry trend: combining specialized expertise to accelerate innovation in the rapidly evolving EV landscape.
