Volkswagen ID. Era 9X Launches in China with 1,600 km Range and 496 hp

Volkswagen has officially opened presales for the ID. Era 9X in China, a full-size electrified SUV developed in partnership with SAIC Motor.

Designed specifically for the competitive Chinese family SUV segment, the new model starts at 329,800 yuan (around $47,700) and brings a compelling mix of long-range capability, advanced tech, and premium comfort.

The ID. Era 9X is set to launch on April 25, targeting rivals such as the Li Auto L9, Aito M9, and Denza D9.

Full-Size Dimensions with Aerodynamic Focus

Positioned as a large family crossover, the ID. Era 9X measures 5,207 mm in length with a 3,070 mm wheelbase—slightly longer than the BMW X7. Despite its size, the SUV achieves a drag coefficient of just 0.253 Cd, significantly improving efficiency compared to key competitors.

The exterior design features modern EV styling cues, including split headlights, a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, retractable door handles, and a full-width rear light bar. Functional elements such as soft-closing doors and powered side steps reinforce its premium positioning.

Tech-Heavy Interior with Six-Seat Layout

Inside, the ID. Era 9X adopts a 2+2+2 seating configuration tailored for family use. The dashboard integrates dual 15.6-inch displays alongside a slim digital instrument cluster and a head-up display.

Second-row passengers benefit from “zero-gravity” seats and embedded entertainment screens, while a 21.4-inch ceiling-mounted display enhances rear-seat entertainment. A 27-speaker sound system further elevates the cabin experience.

Cargo capacity starts at 210 liters and expands up to 1,014 liters with the third row folded electronically.

Advanced Driver Assistance and Sensors

The SUV is equipped with the Momenta R7 assisted driving system, enabling Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) functions on both highways and urban roads. Its sensor suite includes a 192-line LiDAR unit, 12 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a millimeter-wave radar.

Extended-Range Powertrain with Impressive Distance

The ID. Era 9X adopts an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) setup. A 1.5-liter EA211 gasoline engine acts solely as a generator, supplying energy to the battery and motors rather than driving the wheels directly.

At launch, the SUV is offered with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 370 kW (496 hp), paired with a 51.1 kWh battery. This configuration delivers an electric-only range of 347 km (CLTC) and a combined range of up to 1,611 km.

Higher trims increase output to 380 kW (510 hp) and feature a larger 65.2 kWh battery, extending electric range to 406 km and total range to 1,651 km. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 5.6 seconds.

Chassis and Driving Enhancements

The ID. Era 9X comes standard with rear-wheel steering, enabling a tight 4.85-meter turning radius—smaller than that of a Mini Hatch. A dual-chamber air suspension system allows ride height adjustment of up to 150 mm, supported by a continuous damping system for improved ride comfort and handling.

Pricing and Trims

Volkswagen offers the ID. Era 9X in three trims:

– Pro AWD – 329,800 yuan ($47,715)
– Max AWD – 359,800 yuan ($52,055)
– Ultra AWD – 379,800 yuan ($54,950)

Market Outlook

With its long-range EREV setup, premium interior features, and advanced driver assistance systems, the ID. Era 9X represents Volkswagen’s latest push to strengthen its position in China’s fast-evolving electric vehicle market. The model’s blend of practicality, performance, and efficiency places it firmly among the top contenders in the full-size electrified SUV segment.
