BYD Builds Its 150,000th Commercial Electric Vehicle

BYD has reached a major milestone in commercial vehicle production, rolling out its 150,000th new energy commercial vehicle at its manufacturing facility in Huai’an, Jiangsu province, China. The milestone vehicle is the Q3 battery-electric semi-truck, highlighting the automaker’s growing ambitions in heavy-duty electric transport.

The achievement comes as BYD shifts more attention toward electric trucks, particularly vehicles designed for long-distance freight operations. While the Chinese automaker is widely known for its electric passenger cars and battery technology, its commercial vehicle business is becoming an increasingly important part of its expansion strategy.

According to CNEVPost, the milestone vehicle left the production line on October 9, marking 18 years of development in BYD’s commercial new energy vehicle business.

The BYD Q3 is designed for demanding heavy-duty transport applications, combining a large battery pack, powerful electric motors and fast-charging capability.

The electric semi-truck features a commercial-vehicle version of BYD’s Blade Battery technology, using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Its battery capacity is reported at up to 600 kWh, while the dual-motor powertrain delivers a peak output of 600 kW, equivalent to approximately 805 horsepower.

That level of power makes the Q3 a notable entry in the growing market for battery-electric heavy-duty trucks.

The truck is also reported to support a gross combined vehicle weight of approximately 108,000 pounds, or around 49 metric tons. With a fully charged battery, its reported range reaches approximately 325 kilometers (202 miles), although actual range will depend on payload, road conditions, weather and driving patterns.

For operators running demanding freight routes, charging speed can be just as important as battery capacity. The Q3 supports dual-gun DC fast charging, with a reported charging time of around 30 minutes to increase the battery’s state of charge from 20% to 80%.

These specifications are intended to help electric trucks handle intensive commercial operations while reducing dependence on diesel fuel.

BYD Commercial EV Sales Continue to Grow

BYD’s production milestone arrives as its commercial new energy vehicle sales show strong growth in 2026.

The company sold 6,848 commercial NEVs in September, an increase of 113.33% compared with the same month in 2025. Sales during the first nine months of 2026 reached 53,032 vehicles, up 28.46% year over year.

The figures are particularly notable because BYD’s overall new energy vehicle sales moved in the opposite direction during the same period. The automaker sold approximately 3.13 million passenger and commercial new energy vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, down 3.94% from a year earlier.

This contrast suggests that commercial vehicles are becoming an important growth area for BYD as it looks beyond the highly competitive passenger EV market.

However, the 150,000-vehicle milestone represents cumulative commercial NEV production, not the number of trucks produced in 2026 alone. BYD’s commercial vehicle portfolio includes multiple vehicle types and powertrains, rather than exclusively heavy-duty battery-electric trucks.

BYD’s commercial vehicle business began with electric city buses before gradually expanding into other applications.

The company started truck research and development in 2012, building a portfolio that now covers urban delivery vehicles, light-duty trucks, cold-chain logistics vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. Its commercial lineup includes both battery-electric and hybrid models.

In 2025, production of BYD’s T5 light-duty truck reached 10,000 units, while the T4 mini truck was introduced for international markets.

The expansion reflects a broader effort to apply BYD’s battery, electric motor and electronic control technologies to commercial transportation. Rather than relying solely on passenger cars, the company is targeting sectors where electrification could help reduce fuel costs and emissions across large vehicle fleets.

Heavy-duty trucks are a particularly important opportunity, although their adoption depends on factors such as purchase prices, charging infrastructure, battery capacity, vehicle utilization and the availability of suitable charging stops along freight routes.

International Expansion Becomes a Bigger Priority

BYD says its commercial vehicle business has expanded into more than 70 countries and regions. Trucks are increasingly central to its international growth plans as the company seeks opportunities beyond its established electric bus business.

At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany, BYD presented an integrated zero-carbon logistics solution combining commercial vehicles with charging infrastructure, fleet management and maintenance services.

The strategy goes beyond selling electric trucks. Commercial operators need dependable charging access, vehicle servicing and fleet-management systems to keep vehicles working efficiently and control operating costs.

By combining vehicles with supporting services, BYD aims to offer fleet operators a more complete electrification package. This could become especially important for businesses managing multiple trucks across regional distribution networks and long-distance routes.

International expansion will also require BYD to address local regulations, service coverage, charging standards and the specific operating requirements of different markets.
