Buick is doubling down on electrification with the launch of its most advanced people mover yet — the all-electric ENCASA MPV. Known as the GL8 ENCASA EV, the new flagship model expands the brand’s premium MPV lineup in China, now spanning gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric options.
Developed through SAIC-GM, the luxury electric van enters the market with a starting price of RMB 489,900 (around $70,000), targeting families and executive buyers seeking space, comfort, and cutting-edge EV technology.
900V Architecture and Ultra-Fast Charging Lead the Way
At the core of the ENCASA EV is a next-generation 900V electrical platform — a first for the MPV segment. Paired with a 96 kWh battery pack, the electric van delivers up to 601 km (373 miles) of CLTC range.
Even more impressive is its charging performance. With peak charging power reaching 640 kW, the ENCASA EV can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 11–11.5 minutes under optimal conditions, making it one of the fastest-charging electric vehicles in its class.
This combination of long range and ultra-fast charging significantly improves usability for both daily commutes and long-distance travel.
Powerful Dual-Motor AWD Performance
Despite its large footprint, the ENCASA EV delivers sports-car-like performance thanks to a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. It produces a combined 646 hp (482 kW) and 550 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds.
This level of performance is rare in the MPV segment, blending practicality with surprising speed.
Bigger Than Rivals, Built for Comfort
Measuring 5,260 mm in length, the ENCASA EV is larger than competitors like the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and Kia PV5, offering a spacious three-row layout for up to seven passengers.
Inside, Buick leans heavily into luxury and technology. Highlights include:
– Reclining captain’s chairs with heating, cooling, and leg rests
– Built-in refrigerator
– Air suspension for enhanced ride comfort
– 16-speaker Bose premium audio system
The cabin is also packed with screens:
– Dual 16.3-inch infotainment and passenger displays
– 10.25-inch digital driver cluster
– Massive 50-inch augmented reality head-up display
– 21-inch rear entertainment screen
– Two 5.5-inch rear control panels
The result is a high-tech, lounge-like environment designed for both drivers and passengers.
Intelligent Driving and Advanced Safety
The ENCASA EV features Buick’s Xiaoyao Zhixing advanced driver assistance system, powered by the Momenta R6 reinforcement learning model. It enables navigation-assisted driving in complex urban and highway environments — even without high-definition maps.
Safety remains a core focus. The vehicle uses General Motors’ dedicated EV battery platform, validated across billions of kilometers of testing. A reinforced battery structure, advanced thermal management, and a body made with 78% high-strength steel contribute to enhanced crash protection and durability.
A New Chapter for Buick’s MPV Leadership
Since the introduction of the GL8 in 1999, Buick has been a dominant player in China’s premium MPV segment, with over 2 million customers. In 2025, the brand ranked No. 1 in MPV sales in China, with new energy vehicles accounting for more than half of total sales.
The ENCASA EV represents the next step in that journey — combining luxury, innovation, and electrification in a segment that’s rapidly evolving.
While availability remains limited to China for now, the model raises an interesting question: could a premium electric MPV like this succeed globally?
