Volkswagen ID.3 Neo Debuts with New Software, One-Pedal Driving and V2L

Volkswagen ID.3 Neo is preparing to make its global debut in mid-April as the successor to the popular Volkswagen ID.3. The updated compact EV introduces a new name and a host of technology upgrades designed to improve performance, usability, and everyday flexibility for electric vehicle drivers.

At the heart of the new model is Volkswagen’s latest software generation, which delivers enhanced driver assistance systems, improved infotainment capabilities, and expanded vehicle functionality across the brand’s growing electric lineup.

New Software Brings Advanced Driver Assistance

The latest software platform introduces several new features to enhance both comfort and efficiency. Among the highlights is an upgraded Travel Assist system capable of detecting traffic lights, helping drivers navigate urban environments more smoothly.

Another notable addition is One-Pedal Driving, allowing the vehicle to recuperate energy through regenerative braking until it comes to a complete stop. This feature simplifies driving in stop-and-go traffic while maximizing energy recovery.

The software has already begun rolling out across other Volkswagen EVs, including the Volkswagen ID.4, Volkswagen ID.5, and Volkswagen ID.7, which can now be ordered with the new system and the latest Innovision infotainment interface.

According to Kai Grünitz, Member of the Volkswagen Board responsible for Technical Development, the upgrade significantly improves the user experience across the brand’s electric portfolio.

“The new software generation brings more performance and an even better customer experience to the ID. models,” Grünitz said.

Volkswagen also confirmed that upcoming compact EVs such as the Volkswagen ID. Polo, Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI, and Volkswagen ID. Cross will launch with the same innovations.

Innovision Infotainment and In-Car App Store

The new ID. generation introduces Volkswagen’s Innovision infotainment system, designed to provide a more connected in-car experience. A built-in app store integrated into the In-Car Shop allows drivers to download or activate features and services directly from the vehicle.

Similar to a smartphone ecosystem, users can access apps for audio and music streaming, video services, parking and charging tools or gaming and entertainment.

The system also enables flexible, vehicle-specific activation of features, allowing owners to upgrade functionality digitally over time.

Digital Vehicle Key for Smartphone Access

Volkswagen is also introducing an optional digital vehicle key across the new ID. range. The feature allows drivers to unlock and start the vehicle using a smartphone or smartwatch, complementing the traditional key.

Communication between the mobile device and the car works similarly to contactless payments and does not require a dedicated app. Future ID. models will also feature redesigned steering wheel buttons to provide more intuitive control of vehicle functions.

Vehicle-to-Load Adds Everyday Flexibility

Another key addition is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, enabling the car’s high-voltage battery to power external devices.

With up to 3.6 kW of output, owners can run or charge appliances directly from the vehicle, including electric grills, coffee makers, E-bikes and camping equipment.

Power can be accessed through a 230-volt socket inside the vehicle or via the charging port using a dedicated adapter. This functionality makes the new ID. models particularly useful for outdoor activities, road trips, or emergency power situations.

Improved Efficiency and Extended Range

Volkswagen is also upgrading the drivetrain and battery technology in its entry-level electric models. The Pure versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 now feature the new APP 350 electric drive unit, producing 140 kW (190 PS) and delivering higher torque with improved efficiency compared to the previous APP 310 motor.

Paired with a 58 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, the updated system increases driving range while maintaining durability and cost efficiency. For example, the ID.4’s range improves by up to 40 km (WLTP) compared to earlier versions.

Ready for Future Regulations

Volkswagen designed both the hardware and software of the new ID. generation to meet upcoming global regulations, including:

– Euro 7
– ZEV3
– General Safety Regulation 2

These updates ensure that Volkswagen’s electric lineup remains compliant with evolving environmental and safety standards across major markets.

A Major Step Forward for Volkswagen’s EV Lineup

With the upcoming debut of the ID.3 Neo, Volkswagen is pushing forward with the next phase of its electric strategy. Combining advanced software, smarter driver assistance, digital services, and practical features like Vehicle-to-Load, the new compact EV aims to make electric mobility even more versatile for everyday life.

The official world premiere in April will reveal further details about the model’s design, specifications, and market availability.
