The all-electric Volvo EX90 has been recognized as the most impressive new luxury vehicle of the past year by the expert jury of the World Car Awards.
The seven-seat all-electric family SUV has claimed the prestigious title of World Luxury Car, lauded for its comfortable and refined interior, cutting-edge safety technology, and distinctive Scandinavian design ethos.
The announcement of the EX90’s victory took place today, in anticipation of the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan. The World Car Awards jury, comprising 96 automotive journalists from 30 countries, rigorously evaluated the EX90 through extensive test drives. These evaluations allowed the jury members to fully appreciate the silent yet potent performance of the 510 horsepower, twin-motor EX90, alongside its ergonomically designed and luxurious cabin, crafted for exceptional comfort on long journeys.
“The recognition the EX90 has received is truly gratifying,” stated Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive officer of Volvo Cars. “Facing strong competition, this award underscores the EX90’s appeal to discerning customers worldwide.”
The design philosophy behind the EX90 is rooted in fundamental Scandinavian principles, prioritizing function. The vehicle’s front end exhibits a confident yet smooth contour, optimizing airflow. This design, coupled with flush elements such as the side glazing, significantly enhances both aerodynamics and efficiency.
The integration of lidar technology in the EX90 presented an aerodynamic challenge that was deemed worthwhile due to its crucial contribution to safety. When combined with cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors, the lidar system provides a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the vehicle’s surroundings. To maximize its effectiveness while minimizing aerodynamic drag, it has been seamlessly integrated at the center of the roofline under a low-profile cover.
Inside the cabin, which boasts exceptional quietness within its segment, the EX90 introduces innovative and progressive materials that showcase Volvo Cars’ unique interpretation of modern luxury. Notably, Nordico, a leather-free upholstery option, offers an elegant aesthetic while being crafted from recycled and bio-attributed materials sourced from forests in Sweden and Finland. Enhancing the onboard ambiance are advanced interior LED lights that mimic natural sunlight and backlit wood decor.
The EX90’s true seven-seat configuration provides a notable advantage in its class: substantial trunk space. With all seven seats in use, the EX90 offers a load capacity of up to 324 liters behind the third row. Folding down the third row expands the storage capacity to an impressive 697 liters, setting the EX90 apart from many of its competitors.
This latest accolade marks Volvo Cars’ third World Car Award. Previous wins include the overall 2018 World Car of the Year for the Volvo XC60 and the 2024 World Urban Car for the Volvo EX30. Additionally, in 2018, Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson was the inaugural recipient of the World Car Person of the Year award.
