BYD Delivers Over 3M Plug-in Vehicles In 2023, Beats Tesla In Quarterly EV Sales

In 2023, BYD achieved a total yearly sales of 3,024,417 new energy vehicles, which includes battery-only and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, a YoY growth of 61.8%.

The Chinese company said it had sold a record 526,000 battery-only vehicles in the final quarter of 2023, up from 431,603 all-electric BEVs in Q3. It marked the first quarter its battery-only sales have outpaced Tesla’s. Tesla said Tuesday it delivered 484,507 — also a record — during the quarter.

However, for the whole of 2023, Elon Musk’s company still outpaced BYD, selling 1.8 million electric cars. BYD sold 1.57 million electric vehicles, up 73% on 2022, as well as 1.44 million plug-in hybrids.

Besides BEVs, BYD also sold 416,242 plug-in hybrids in the fourth quarter. In total, BYD sold 942,651 new energy vehicles in the fourth quarter.

Overseas sales swelled to a fresh record in December with 36,095 deliveries, up nearly 18% from November and 219% vs. a year earlier.

BYD sells most of its cars in China but is expanding globally. The company now sells vehicles in Europe, in Mexico, in South America, in Africa, across Asia, and in Australia.

Last month, it announced it would build an EV factory in Hungary, which would be its first passenger car plant in Europe. It already has a bus factory in Komárom, Hungary.

The company stopped producing purely gasoline and diesel-powered cars in March 2022, switching to focusing on producing plug-in hybrid vehicles and pure electric vehicles.
