Formula One Cars to Use Battery Power on Pit Lane

FIA, the governing body that regulates Formula One, has revealed technical regulations for 2014 which will now include the necessity for cars to run on electricity only for the entire time they’re in the pit lane.

Under the 2014 regulations (rule 5.19) the teams will have to run the cars on electric power in the pit lane using their ERS (Energy Recovery Systems), which will comprise of energy recovery from exhaust heat as well as the KERS in use today.

The power capacity of KERS will increase from 60KW to 120KW, supplying a significantly bigger power boost to aid overtaking.

FIA has also decided that the current V8 engines will have to go from the sport to cut down on costs and to reduce the fuel consumption by 35%. The engine will be downsized to 1.6 liter V6 turbo from the current 2.4 liter V8 engines.

The 2014 regulations can be viewed in fullĀ here in pdf format.
