Nissan Investigates Leaf Electric Car Problem

Nissan has received complaints from owners that its Leaf electric car on occasion fails to restart after switching the motor off.

While the exact cause is not known, the problem is being traced back to the Leaf’s air-conditioning unit.

“If this sensor is activated it will illuminate a warning light on the instrument panel and may cause the vehicle to not restart once it has been turned off. We are actively investigating to determine the root cause and what action is necessary to address the issue,” Nissan said in a statement.

The problem is affecting cars in both the U.S. and Japan, although the total number is still unknown. Nissan isn’t planning a recall because the problem isn’t a safety issue.

So far, the Leaf has sold 452 units in the U.S. and 3,300 units in Japan.
