Polestar is strengthening its push to lower EV ownership costs in Europe by expanding its Polestar Energy offer with grid rewards in Germany and France, while introducing car-controlled smart charging for key models.
As Europe’s energy landscape rapidly evolves, home EV charging is playing a growing role in grid stability. Polestar’s latest update directly addresses a critical need among European drivers: affordable, reliable and seamless home charging.
Grid Rewards Now Available in Germany and France
First launched at the end of 2024 and rolled out to 12 European markets by mid-2025, Polestar Energy already offered smart charging and home solar integration. Now, in partnership with Octopus Energy, the brand is adding grid rewards in Germany and France.
Grid rewards provide additional savings by incentivising drivers to charge their vehicles when electricity demand is lower or when renewable energy supply is higher. In return for supporting grid stability, customers benefit from reduced charging costs.
For example, in Germany, Polestar drivers using Polestar Energy alongside an Intelligent Octopus tariff can save up to 50% per home charging session, translating into potential annual savings of up to €300.
With energy prices remaining elevated across much of Europe, this move significantly improves the total cost of ownership (TCO) for EV drivers.
Car-Controlled Smart Charging: No Special Wallbox Required
In a major usability upgrade, Polestar is introducing car-controlled smart charging for the Polestar 2 and Polestar 4.
Available via the Polestar Energy app across all supported markets, the new feature allows the vehicle itself to optimise charging times based on real-time energy price signals, household electricity demand and local grid conditions.
Crucially, drivers no longer need a specific integrated home charger to access smart charging benefits. This removes one of the biggest barriers to adoption and opens the system to a broader range of European customers.
Since the majority of EV charging takes place at home, simplifying access to intelligent charging is a key step toward mainstream adoption.
Lower Costs, Lower CO₂
Beyond cost savings, smart charging also delivers environmental benefits. By shifting charging sessions to periods when electricity prices are lowest — typically when renewable generation is highest — drivers can reduce the CO₂ footprint of their vehicle’s use phase.
This dual benefit of lower costs and lower emissions aligns with broader EU decarbonisation goals and strengthens the case for EV ownership across European markets.
A Strategic Move for European EV Drivers
With expanding grid rewards, car-controlled smart charging, and continued app-based integration, Polestar Energy is positioning itself as more than just a charging solution — it’s becoming a cost-reduction and sustainability tool tailored for European EV owners.
The Polestar Energy app is available as a free download in supported markets.
