BYD has launched the second-generation Seagull in China, combining a lower starting price with a larger five-seat cabin. Higher-spec versions also introduce flash charging, bringing a major charging upgrade to the brand’s affordable electric hatchback.
Prices start at 65,900 yuan, approximately $9,810 at launch exchange rates. However, buyers seeking the headline charging technology will need to choose a version costing at least 75,900 yuan.
Flash Charging Comes to Three Versions
The two entry variants pair a 30.1-kWh battery with a claimed 320-km CLTC range. Three higher trims receive a 39.2-kWh pack, extending the rating to 420 km.
According to BYD, those larger-battery versions can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes at dedicated flash charging stations. These figures describe a partial recharge under suitable conditions, while CLTC range should not be treated as equivalent to real-world driving range.
A Bigger Cabin and More Equipment
Measuring 4,205 mm long, the new Seagull grows by 425 mm, while its wheelbase stretches to 2,650 mm. Seating increases from four to five, moving the hatchback closer to the BYD Dolphin in size.
Inside, available equipment includes a 15.6-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, driver’s seat massage and 50W wireless phone charging. Storage includes a 94-liter front trunk and up to 1,380 liters behind the front seats with the rear seats folded.
More Power and Available LiDAR
Motor outputs rise to 85 kW or 95 kW. Second-generation Blade Battery technology and independent multi-link rear suspension also feature among the upgrades.
Available DiPilot 300 driver assistance uses LiDAR and supports navigation-assisted driving functions. Equipment varies by version, so the headline technology should not be assumed to accompany the lowest advertised price.
For budget EV buyers, the Seagull’s appeal now extends beyond its purchase price. More passenger space and faster charging could make it a more versatile everyday car. The crucial distinction remains affordability: the entry model delivers the lowest price, while flash charging requires stepping up the range.
