The 2027 Mercedes-Benz G 580 Electric is getting a handful of important upgrades, and the biggest one is hiding behind its iconic boxy body: the electric G-Class now comes with native NACS charging.
Mercedes-Benz has opened orders for the 2027 G 580 Electric in the U.S., with the updated luxury electric SUV also gaining faster DC charging, better efficiency and 10 additional miles of EPA-rated range.
The improvements come with a modest price increase. The 2027 G 580 Electric starts at $165,200 including destination, compared with $164,550 for the 2026 model.
The 2027 G 580 Electric Finally Gets NACS
For 2027, Mercedes-Benz has replaced the previous CCS1 charging setup with two separate charging ports.
A NACS port is dedicated to DC fast charging, while a J1772 connector handles Level 2 AC charging.
That means G 580 owners can connect directly to compatible NACS DC fast chargers, including Tesla Superchargers, without needing a CCS-to-NACS adapter.
Mercedes-Benz is also providing an adapter for CCS1 DC fast chargers, giving owners access to both charging standards.
There is one catch.
Because the NACS port is intended for DC charging only, owners who want to use NACS-equipped Level 2 AC chargers, such as Tesla Destination Chargers, will need a NACS-to-J1772 adapter. Mercedes does not include that adapter with the vehicle.
It’s an unusual solution, but it allows Mercedes to offer native NACS DC fast charging without redesigning the vehicle around a single combined charging inlet.
Charging Is Slightly Faster
The G 580 Electric isn’t getting a higher peak charging rate for 2027. Maximum DC charging power remains 200 kW.
However, Mercedes-Benz says the SUV can now charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes, compared with 32 minutes for the previous model.
That suggests the improvement comes from changes to charging software and power management rather than a higher peak charging capability.
The onboard AC charger continues to support up to 9.6 kW.
Range Climbs to 249 Miles
The electric G-Class also becomes slightly more efficient for 2027.
EPA-rated efficiency rises to 71 MPGe, compared with 62 MPGe for the previous model. Energy consumption drops from approximately 54 kWh per 100 miles to around 48 kWh per 100 miles.
As a result, the 2027 G 580 Electric now has an EPA-estimated 249 miles of range. That’s an increase of 10 miles over the previous model’s 239-mile rating.
The improvement is particularly notable because Mercedes hasn’t changed the fundamental characteristics that make the G 580 such a large and heavy EV. The SUV retains its upright body, substantial off-road hardware and 20-inch wheels.
579 HP and Four Electric Motors
Underneath, the 2027 G 580 Electric remains essentially unchanged.
The electric G-Class uses four permanently excited synchronous motors, with one motor powering each wheel. Combined output is rated at approximately 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque.
The four-motor system provides independent torque control at each wheel, allowing Mercedes to reproduce several of the traditional G-Class’s off-road functions in electric form.
Each drive unit incorporates a two-speed gearbox, giving the G 580 a selectable low-range mode for difficult terrain.
The SUV also retains features such as G-TURN and G-STEERING.
G-TURN allows the vehicle to rotate in a very tight space by controlling the torque delivered to individual wheels, while G-STEERING is designed to improve maneuverability during off-road driving.
The G 580 Is Still a Heavy Electric SUV
The 2027 Mercedes G 580 Electric weighs around 6,746 pounds, making its 4.6-second 0-60 mph acceleration even more impressive.
Top speed remains electronically limited to 112 mph.
The battery is integrated into the G-Class’s ladder-frame chassis, while the combination of a large battery, four motors and serious off-road equipment contributes to the vehicle’s considerable weight.
That weight and the G-Class’s upright aerodynamic profile also explain why its efficiency remains well below that of many other electric SUVs.
But efficiency isn’t really the primary reason buyers choose a G-Class.
The G 580 is designed to combine electric performance with the traditional G-Class approach to off-road capability, including low-range gearing, individual wheel torque control and electronic versions of differential-locking functions.
2027 Mercedes G 580 Electric Price
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz G 580 Electric starts at $163,750 before destination charges in the U.S.
With the $1,450 destination charge included, the starting price is $165,200.
That’s $650 more than the 2026 model, which started at $164,550 including destination.
For the additional money, buyers get a more convenient DC charging setup, faster 10-80% charging, improved EPA efficiency and an additional 10 miles of driving range.
Is the 2027 G 580 Electric a Major Update?
The 2027 model isn’t a complete redesign, but Mercedes-Benz has focused its changes on some of the areas that matter most to EV owners.
Native NACS DC charging is arguably the biggest improvement, especially as NACS becomes increasingly common across the U.S. charging network. The faster 10-80% charging time and improved efficiency also make the electric G-Class somewhat easier to live with.
The G 580 remains an unusual proposition, however. Its massive size, high price and off-road-focused design make it very different from mainstream electric SUVs.
For buyers who specifically want the combination of G-Class styling, serious off-road hardware and an all-electric powertrain, the 2027 G 580 Electric brings a more convenient charging experience without changing the formula that made the electric G-Class distinctive.
