Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+ Debuts With 680 HP, Triple Axial-Flux Motors

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its most powerful compact electric performance model yet, introducing the new CLA 45 4MATIC+ with an advanced three-motor powertrain delivering up to 500 kW (680 hp). Available as both a sedan and Shooting Brake, the all-electric sports car combines supercar-level acceleration with long-distance capability, targeting a new generation of performance enthusiasts.

The new flagship CLA accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.7 seconds while offering a WLTP driving range of up to 670 kilometers (416 miles) for the sedan and 640 kilometers (398 miles) for the Shooting Brake.

Built on the same platform as the award-winning Mercedes-Benz CLA, the AMG variant introduces exclusive powertrain, chassis, aerodynamic and software technologies designed specifically for high-performance electric driving.

Triple Axial-Flux Motors Deliver 680 Horsepower

At the heart of the CLA 45 4MATIC+ is a unique drivetrain featuring three axial-flux electric motors—two mounted on the rear axle and one driving the front wheels.

Unlike conventional radial electric motors, axial-flux motors are significantly more compact while delivering greater power density and continuous performance. The rear motors produce a combined output of 500 kW (680 hp), while the front motor contributes up to 225 kW (360 hp) when additional traction or performance is required.

The system creates a fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive setup capable of continuously adjusting torque between the front and rear axles as well as independently distributing power across the rear wheels using torque vectoring. This allows the CLA 45 4MATIC+ to optimize grip, stability and cornering performance in virtually any driving condition.

94-kWh Battery Offers Up To 670 km Of Range

Power comes from a newly developed 94-kWh lithium-ion battery featuring silicon oxide-enhanced anodes that increase energy density compared with conventional graphite cells.

Mercedes-AMG says the battery has been optimized not only for maximum range but also for consistent high-performance driving, maintaining ideal operating temperatures even under repeated hard acceleration or track use.

Official WLTP range figures include:

– Sedan: Up to 670 km (416 miles)
– Shooting Brake: Up to 640 km (398 miles)

800-Volt Charging Adds 270 km In 10 Minutes

The CLA 45 4MATIC+ uses an 800-volt electrical architecture supporting DC fast charging at up to 330 kW.

Under ideal conditions, charging from 10 to 80 percent takes approximately 22 minutes. A 10-minute charging session can recover more than 270 kilometers (168 miles) of driving range.

A multi-source heat pump helps maximize charging efficiency by using waste heat from both the battery and powertrain while automatically pre-conditioning the battery before arriving at fast chargers.

Performance-Focused Chassis And Active Aerodynamics

To handle its substantial performance, Mercedes-AMG equips the CLA 45 4MATIC+ with adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension featuring electronically controlled three-stage damping.

Drivers can choose from multiple suspension settings including Comfort, Sport and AMGFORCE S+, while the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package adds a dedicated RACE mode developed for track driving.

The vehicle also introduces active aerodynamic elements rarely seen in the compact segment. The sedan features an automatically deploying rear spoiler, while the Shooting Brake receives an active roof spoiler that adjusts according to speed, driving mode and vehicle dynamics to improve both stability and efficiency.

Additional active radiator shutters reduce aerodynamic drag during normal driving while opening automatically when extra cooling is required.

Seven Drive Modes Tailor The Experience

Drivers can personalize the vehicle through seven selectable driving modes:

– Slippery
– Comfort
– Sport
– AMGFORCE S+
– ECO
– Individual
– RACE (with AMG Dynamic Plus Package)

Each mode modifies steering response, suspension behavior, power delivery, regenerative braking and stability control to suit different driving conditions.

The AMGFORCE S+ mode is particularly notable, recreating the sensations of a high-performance combustion engine through synchronized sound effects, simulated gear changes, seat vibrations and dedicated instrument graphics.

Digital Performance Features For The Track

Track enthusiasts benefit from AMG TRACK PACE, which records more than 80 vehicle parameters ten times per second.

The system provides live telemetry, lap timing, acceleration data and driving analysis while supporting many of the world’s most famous racing circuits, including Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps. Drivers can also create custom track layouts and review onboard video recordings where available.

Mercedes-AMG’s Predictive Performance Manager further optimizes energy deployment throughout a lap, intelligently balancing battery usage for consistent performance during extended track sessions.

Aggressive AMG Styling Inside And Out

The CLA 45 4MATIC+ receives a distinct AMG exterior featuring the signature Panamericana grille, wider fenders, unique front and rear bumpers, diffuser styling and standard 19-inch wheels, with optional 20-inch forged wheels available.

Inside, the cabin features AMG sports seats, a performance steering wheel, aluminum trim, microfiber upholstery options and AMG-specific displays throughout the latest generation MBUX infotainment system.

The fourth-generation MBUX platform runs on Mercedes-Benz’s new MB.OS operating system and integrates artificial intelligence from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini to deliver more natural voice interactions and enhanced navigation.

Exclusive AMG Performance, AMG SET-UP and AMG TRACK PACE applications provide real-time information on power output, battery temperature, tire pressures, energy flow and chassis settings.

Mercedes-AMG Pushes Electric Performance Forward

With three axial-flux motors, a 680-horsepower output, 800-volt charging architecture and a driving range exceeding 670 kilometers, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+ establishes a new benchmark for compact electric performance cars.

Combining cutting-edge electric technology with advanced chassis engineering, intelligent all-wheel drive and track-focused software, the new flagship CLA demonstrates how AMG intends to translate its performance heritage into the electric era.
