BYD SHARK Debuts in Europe: 436 HP Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Starts at £47,290

BYD has officially introduced the BYD SHARK to Europe, marking the company’s first pickup truck and bringing its advanced Super Hybrid DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) technology to one of the fastest-growing vehicle segments. Combining impressive performance, strong towing capability and genuine electric driving, the SHARK is designed to challenge conventional diesel pickups while offering significantly better efficiency.

The new plug-in hybrid pickup delivers up to 55.9 miles (90 km) of all-electric WLTP range, making many daily commutes and work journeys possible without using any fuel. When longer trips are required, the hybrid powertrain provides a combined driving range of up to 419 miles (675 km).

Rugged Design Inspired by a Shark

The SHARK adopts a bold exterior inspired by its namesake. Slim headlights connected by a full-width light signature, a prominent grille and muscular bodywork create a distinctive front-end appearance, while protective cladding and integrated side steps reinforce its off-road credentials.

At the rear, a full-width LED light bar and oversized BYD lettering emphasize the truck’s wide stance. Riding on 18-inch wheels, the pickup features a 3,260 mm wheelbase, with approach and departure angles of 31 degrees and 19.3 degrees respectively, enhancing capability on challenging terrain.

SUV-Like Cabin with Premium Technology

Inside, the SHARK aims to deliver comfort that rivals modern SUVs rather than traditional work-focused pickups.

The cabin features heated and ventilated front sports seats, a flat rear floor, generous rear legroom and a relaxed rear seatback angle, making it practical for both families and business users.

Technology is equally impressive, including:

– 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
– 15.6-inch rotating infotainment display
– Head-up display
– Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
– 50W wireless phone charger
– 12-speaker Dynaudio audio system
– Remote climate control via the BYD app
– 360-degree camera and parking sensors

The SHARK also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), supplying up to 6.6 kW of external power for tools, appliances or camping equipment directly from the vehicle.

Super Hybrid DMO Delivers Strong Performance

Power comes from BYD’s latest DMO Super Hybrid system, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors.

Performance figures include:

– Combined output: 436 PS
– Maximum torque: 650 Nm
– 0–100 km/h: 5.7 seconds

Unlike many conventional plug-in hybrids, BYD’s DMO system prioritizes electric driving. The petrol engine frequently acts as a generator, supplying electricity to the motors or the battery, while switching seamlessly between electric, series hybrid, parallel hybrid and direct engine drive depending on driving conditions.

An intelligent all-wheel-drive system offers dedicated modes for Sand, Mud, Snow and Gravel, while double-wishbone suspension at both axles and standard Hill Descent Control improve off-road capability.

Large Battery Sets a New Benchmark

The SHARK uses a 32.2 kWh Blade Battery, currently one of the largest battery packs fitted to a plug-in hybrid pickup.

Key efficiency figures include:

– Electric range: 55.9 miles (90 km) WLTP
– Combined range: 419 miles (675 km)
– WLTP weighted fuel economy: 80.7 mpg
– Fuel economy with depleted battery: 29.4 mpg

Charging is equally competitive. AC charging at 11 kW replenishes the battery from 15% to full in just over three hours, while 55 kW DC fast charging takes the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 21 minutes.

Built for Work and Adventure

The SHARK combines electrified performance with genuine utility.

It offers:

– 2,500 kg towing capacity
– 790 kg payload
– 1,200-litre cargo bed
– Ladder-frame chassis
– Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) battery integration for improved rigidity and protection

BYD says more than 50% of the body structure uses high-strength steel, contributing to increased durability and safety.

Comprehensive Standard Equipment

Rather than offering multiple trims, BYD equips every SHARK with a generous list of standard features.

Driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, Forward and Rear Collision Warning, Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with braking, Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, Hill Hold Control and seven airbags.

The pickup is available in five exterior colours: Atlantis Blue, Obsidian Black, Polar White, Grey Green and Sunrise Orange.

Price and Availability

The BYD SHARK starts at £47,290 (including VAT) in the UK. Orders are now open, with first customer deliveries expected during Q4 2026.

With strong performance, a class-leading electric driving range, practical work capabilities and an extensive list of standard equipment, the BYD SHARK positions itself as one of the most compelling electrified pickups to arrive in the European market.
