Mobileye Plans U.S. Robotaxi Launch in 2027, Expanding Beyond Autonomous Driving Technology

Mobileye has announced plans to enter the autonomous ride-hailing market as a direct operator, marking a major strategic shift for the self-driving technology leader. The company intends to launch its own robotaxi service in a major U.S. metropolitan area in 2027, combining autonomous driving technology, fleet management, and rider services under a single business operation.

The move represents an expansion beyond Mobileye’s traditional role as a supplier of autonomous driving systems to automakers and mobility providers. While continuing to support existing partners, the company plans to build and operate its own autonomous ride-hailing network, creating a vertically integrated robotaxi business.

Mobileye Targets End-to-End Robotaxi Operations

At the center of the initiative is Mobileye Drive, the company’s self-driving platform that is already being integrated into various partner programs worldwide. Under the new strategy, Mobileye will combine Mobileye Drive with capabilities from its Moovit subsidiary, including mobility applications, multimodal trip planning, fleet management, autonomous vehicle mission control, and teleoperation integration.

The company said direct robotaxi operations will complement—not replace—its existing business model. Mobileye expects both customer-led deployments and its own autonomous ride-hailing services to develop in parallel, helping accelerate adoption while generating valuable real-world operating data.

Initial Fleet of 100 Vehicles Planned

Mobileye is preparing an initial fleet of approximately 100 autonomous vehicles for deployment in 2027. The phased rollout will be used to validate the business model under fully driverless operating conditions.

If successful, the company plans an aggressive expansion strategy. Mobileye is targeting a fleet of roughly 17,000 vehicles within five years of launch, positioning itself as a significant player in the rapidly growing robotaxi sector.

Leveraging Decades of Autonomous Driving Experience

According to Mobileye Founder and CEO Prof. Amnon Shashua, the autonomous mobility market remains in its early stages despite growing industry momentum.

Shashua said Mobileye sees an opportunity to introduce a new model built on its extensive autonomous driving expertise, industry partnerships, and mobility ecosystem capabilities. He added that the company’s goal is to create a financially sustainable and geographically scalable robotaxi business capable of global deployment.

To support the initiative, Mobileye will work with AV-ready vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators, vehicle integration partners, and technology suppliers. The resulting ecosystem is expected to enable the company to operate autonomous ride-hailing services through a dedicated business division.

Moovit Provides Global Mobility Expertise

The expansion also strengthens the role of Moovit within Mobileye’s broader mobility strategy. The mobility platform currently serves more than 1.7 billion users across over 3,500 cities in 112 countries and supports 45 languages.

Moovit’s expertise in trip planning, rider engagement, mobility management, and fleet operations is expected to play a key role in scaling Mobileye’s autonomous transportation services globally.

Building on a Large Installed Base

Mobileye’s autonomous driving technology is backed by more than 25 years of development in computer vision, mapping, sensing, and AI-powered driving systems. The company says over 230 million vehicles worldwide have been produced with Mobileye technology onboard, providing a vast foundation of real-world driving experience.

With plans to launch its own robotaxi service while maintaining partnerships across the automotive industry, Mobileye is positioning itself to become both a leading technology provider and a direct operator in the next phase of autonomous mobility.
