Renault 5 E-Tech Electric Tops UK EV Sales in April 2026

The Renault 5 E-Tech electric has emerged as the UK’s best-selling electric car in April, according to the latest registration data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The milestone highlights a sharp shift in consumer demand as rising fuel costs continue to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.

EV Demand Accelerates Amid Rising Oil Prices

Interest in Renault’s electric vehicle lineup surged significantly following the spike in oil prices in late February. Online enquiries increased by 42% compared to the previous two months, signalling a growing appetite for more cost-efficient alternatives to petrol and diesel cars.

That surge in interest has now translated into tangible sales performance. In April, Renault’s electric models — including the Renault 5, Renault 4, Megane, and Scenic — accounted for more than 49% of the brand’s total passenger car registrations. This marks a notable tipping point as EVs move closer to mainstream dominance within the brand’s portfolio.

New Features Strengthen Renault 5 Appeal

Renault has further enhanced the appeal of the Renault 5 E-Tech electric with a series of updates aimed at improving everyday usability and driver comfort.

A key addition is the introduction of one-pedal driving, now standard on higher trims. This system adds a fourth level of regenerative braking, allowing drivers to decelerate and even come to a complete stop using only the accelerator. The feature is particularly useful in urban environments and stop-start traffic, where efficiency and convenience are critical.

Safety and personalization have also been upgraded. A new driver attention alert system uses an interior camera to detect signs of fatigue or distraction, helping to improve road safety. Meanwhile, new “PoweR5” decals provide additional customization options for buyers looking to personalize their vehicle.

Connected Tech and Everyday Practicality

The Renault 5 E-Tech electric also benefits from a comprehensive connected services package. Drivers receive up to 2GB of monthly data for in-car apps, enabling more than 40 hours of audio streaming. This enhances the ownership experience, making the vehicle more integrated with everyday digital lifestyles.

At the core of the car’s tech offering is the OpenR Link infotainment system with Google built-in, delivering seamless navigation, voice control, and app integration.

Range, Charging, and Pricing

The Renault 5 E-Tech electric combines retro-inspired design with modern EV performance. It is available in three trim levels and offers a choice of two powertrains.

Depending on the version, the model delivers up to 252 miles (WLTP) of driving range. Fast-charging capability allows the battery to recharge from 15% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes, making it a practical option for both urban commuting and longer journeys.

Affordability remains a key selling point. With eligibility for the UK’s Electric Car Grant, pricing starts from £21,495 on-the-road, positioning the Renault 5 as one of the most accessible electric cars in its segment.

EV Ownership Becomes More Compelling

The broader market context continues to favor electric vehicles. With lower running costs compared to petrol cars — estimated at around £650 in annual savings for the average driver — and a rapidly expanding charging network, the transition to EVs is becoming increasingly attractive.

As consumer priorities shift toward efficiency, affordability, and sustainability, the Renault 5 E-Tech electric’s success reflects a wider transformation in the UK automotive market. With strong demand, competitive pricing, and continuous feature upgrades, it is well-positioned to remain a key player in the growing EV landscape.
