Volvo Cars reported global sales of 153,316 vehicles in the first quarter of 2026, marking an 11% decline compared to the same period last year. Despite the overall drop, the Swedish automaker continues to gain momentum in electrification, with fully electric vehicle sales rising 12% year-over-year.
The growth in EV deliveries highlights a steady transition toward electrification, even as the global automotive market faces mounting challenges, including pricing pressure, geopolitical uncertainty, tariffs, and evolving regulations.
Electrified Models Reach Record Share
Fully electric vehicles accounted for 23.7% of Volvo’s total sales during the quarter, while plug-in hybrid models made up 23.6%. Combined, electrified vehicles represented 47.3% of total deliveries—one of the highest shares among legacy premium car manufacturers.
This strong mix underscores Volvo’s strategic focus on electrification as a core growth driver, particularly in key markets across Europe and the Rest of the World.
Europe Leads EV Growth
In Europe and other international markets, Volvo recorded 95,335 vehicle sales in Q1, a modest 2% decline year-over-year. However, fully electric car sales in the region surged by 21%, reflecting strong demand for zero-emission vehicles.
Electrified models accounted for 57% of total sales in these markets, reinforcing Volvo’s competitive position in the premium EV segment.
Americas Hit by Weak Demand and Policy Changes
The Americas region experienced the steepest decline, with sales falling 28% to 29,651 vehicles. The downturn was largely driven by weak consumer sentiment and the removal of government incentives for electrified vehicles.
As a result, deliveries of electrified models in the region dropped by 30%, highlighting the sensitivity of EV adoption to policy support and economic conditions.
China Shows Mixed Results but Strong Electrified Growth
In the Greater China region, Volvo reported sales of 28,330 vehicles, down 17% compared to the previous year. The decline was attributed to intense competition, seasonal factors, and the extended Chinese New Year holiday period.
However, electrified vehicle sales in China surged by 116%, reaching 7,604 units. This growth was largely fueled by a 146% increase in plug-in hybrid deliveries, signaling strong demand for electrified options in the world’s largest EV market.
Positive Outlook Driven by Upcoming Models
Volvo’s leadership emphasized that fully electric vehicles remain central to its long-term growth strategy. The company reported six consecutive months of increasing EV deliveries through March, even ahead of the launch of new models.
Production ramp-up plans for upcoming vehicles, including the highly anticipated Volvo EX60, are expected to further strengthen Volvo’s position in the premium electric segment. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid models like the Volvo XC70 continue to play a key role in markets such as China.
Industry Headwinds Persist
While Volvo’s electrification progress remains strong, the broader industry continues to face significant headwinds. Factors such as geopolitical tensions, shifting regulations, and reduced subsidies are creating a complex operating environment for automakers worldwide.
Even so, the company’s growing EV share and sustained demand in key regions suggest that the transition to electric mobility is accelerating—despite short-term market volatility.
