Hyundai Unveils IONIQ V as Part of Major China EV Expansion

At Auto China 2026, Hyundai Motor Company reinforced its long-term commitment to the world’s largest electric vehicle market with the debut of the all-new IONIQ V and the official rollout of its dedicated IONIQ EV lineup in China.

As the global automotive industry accelerates toward electrification—driven heavily by China’s rapid advancements in software, battery tech, and mobility innovation—Hyundai is reshaping its strategy with a localized approach.

The company’s “In China, For China, To Global” philosophy positions the country not only as a key sales market but also as a central hub for EV development and future competitiveness.

A Multi-Billion Yuan Investment and Aggressive Product Plan

To strengthen its foothold, Hyundai and its joint venture partner BAIC Group are investing 8 billion yuan into Beijing Hyundai. This funding supports a sweeping transformation focused on localized innovation and product development tailored specifically to Chinese consumers.

The roadmap includes launching 20 new models over the next five years, marking Hyundai’s most ambitious expansion in China. The lineup will span battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), with a strong focus on midsize and large segments. The goal is clear: reach annual sales of 500,000 units while also boosting export opportunities.

IONIQ V: A New Flagship for China

The newly unveiled IONIQ V represents a major milestone in Hyundai’s China strategy. As the first dedicated IONIQ production model developed specifically for the Chinese market, it blends global engineering expertise with localized innovation.

Inspired by the VENUS Concept, the model introduces Hyundai’s new EV design language, “The Origin,” featuring a sleek silhouette, futuristic lighting signature, and aerodynamic elements like frameless doors and floating mirrors.

The long-range version delivers over 600 kilometers (CLTC) on a single charge, positioning it competitively for both urban commuting and long-distance travel.

Premium Interior and Tech-Focused Cabin

Inside, the IONIQ V focuses on space, comfort, and advanced technology. With a 2,900 mm wheelbase and generous cabin dimensions, the vehicle offers a lounge-like interior designed for modern lifestyles.

A standout feature is the 27-inch ultra-thin 4K panoramic display, seamlessly integrating infotainment and driving information. This is paired with a head-up display and ambient lighting to enhance the in-cabin experience.

The vehicle also includes an eight-speaker sound system with Dolby Atmos, delivering a more immersive entertainment experience.

Ride comfort is another priority, with optimized suspension tuning and enhanced noise insulation ensuring a quieter, smoother drive across varying road conditions.

Smart AI and Advanced Safety Systems

Hyundai has equipped the IONIQ V with a new generation of intelligent technologies. At the core is a large language model-based AI assistant, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 platform, enabling fast and intuitive voice control for vehicle functions.

On the safety side, the model features a reinforced body structure, a nine-airbag system, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies. These systems are enhanced through collaboration with Momenta, improving performance across real-world driving scenarios.

Additional features like Pedal Misapplication Safety Assist help prevent unintended acceleration, further boosting driver confidence.

Redefining the Customer Experience

Hyundai is also overhauling its customer experience in China with a more transparent and user-centric approach. A “One Price” policy will simplify purchasing, while expanded charging infrastructure and battery services aim to improve ownership convenience.

New retail formats—including dedicated IONIQ brand spaces and standalone hubs in major cities—are designed to deliver a consistent and premium brand experience. Customers will also benefit from dedicated EV specialists and enhanced service programs.

Open Innovation and Strategic Partnerships

A key pillar of Hyundai’s strategy is “Open Innovation,” which emphasizes collaboration with leading Chinese technology firms. Partnerships with CATL for battery development and Momenta for ADAS technologies ensure that Hyundai’s vehicles remain competitive in China’s fast-moving EV ecosystem.

By combining global expertise with local innovation, Hyundai aims to deliver EVs that meet the unique expectations of Chinese consumers while maintaining global relevance.

The debut of the IONIQ V signals more than just a new model launch—it marks the beginning of Hyundai’s broader transformation in China. With significant investment, a strong product pipeline, and deep local partnerships, the company is positioning itself to compete aggressively in the world’s most dynamic EV market.
