Audi and SAIC Expand EV Partnership with New Shanghai Innovation Center

Audi and SAIC Motor are expanding their long-standing partnership with a new strategic agreement aimed at accelerating electric vehicle innovation in China.

The deal strengthens collaboration across the full value chain, from research and development to production, and signals a deeper commitment to the world’s largest EV market.

At the center of this agreement is the creation of a dedicated AUDI Innovation & Technology Center in Shanghai. Led by Audi, the new facility will focus on developing next-generation intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) tailored specifically to Chinese consumers. The initiative reflects the growing importance of localized innovation as automakers compete in an increasingly tech-driven EV landscape.

A New Phase for Audi’s China Strategy

Since introducing its China-specific AUDI brand in 2024, Audi has pursued a “Best of Both Worlds” strategy, combining German engineering with local expertise. The first model, the AUDI E5 Sportback, launched in 2025, marked the beginning of this approach. Momentum is set to continue with the debut of the AUDI E7X, the brand’s first SUV, at Auto China 2026.

A third model is already planned for 2027, while the newly signed agreement will further expand the lineup and accelerate development timelines. The goal is clear: strengthen Audi’s position in China’s rapidly evolving intelligent connected vehicle segment.

Shanghai R&D Center to Drive Innovation

The upcoming Shanghai-based innovation hub will play a key role in shaping Audi’s future EVs for China. Its focus will include AI-powered digital cabins, advanced driver assistance systems, and full vehicle development aligned with local expectations.

By integrating software, hardware, and user experience design under one roof, Audi aims to deliver vehicles that meet the specific demands of Chinese premium customers—particularly in areas such as connectivity, in-car entertainment, and rear-seat comfort.

Four New Models on Next-Gen Platform

As part of the expanded partnership, Audi and SAIC will jointly develop four all-new models based on the Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP). This next-generation architecture is engineered for intelligent connected vehicles and is expected to support faster innovation cycles and enhanced digital capabilities.

The new models will complement Audi’s existing portfolio in China, broadening its appeal across multiple segments while reinforcing its presence in the premium EV space.

Building on Strong Momentum

The collaboration builds on the early success of Audi’s China-specific lineup. The E5 Sportback established a foundation, while the upcoming E7X is expected to raise the bar with a strong focus on digital experiences and passenger comfort.

With the addition of a dedicated R&D center and a pipeline of new models, Audi and SAIC are positioning themselves to compete more aggressively in China’s high-growth EV market. The move underscores a broader industry trend: global automakers increasingly relying on localized partnerships and innovation hubs to stay competitive in key regions.
