ION Storage Systems Achieves First US Solid-State Battery Customer Qualification

U.S.-based battery innovator ION Storage Systems, Inc. has announced a major breakthrough in the race to commercialize solid-state technology. The company confirmed successful customer qualification of its Cornerstone™ Cell, marking the first time a U.S. solid-state battery developer has passed customer performance validation for its cell technology.

The milestone follows ION’s recent shipment of sample cells to leading industrial, consumer electronics, and automotive partners — a move that signaled the company’s transition from lab development to real-world deployment.

According to CEO Jorge Diaz Schneider, passing performance qualification represents a defining step not only for ION, but for the broader solid-state battery industry.

ION’s Cornerstone cells are built around a solid-state, anodeless architecture designed to eliminate many of the constraints associated with conventional lithium-ion batteries. By removing the traditional anode structure, the company aims to deliver higher energy density, improved safety, and enhanced thermal stability.

Chief Technology Officer Dr. Greg Hitz emphasized that bringing a solid-state, anodeless battery out of the lab and into commercial validation is a company-defining achievement. He highlighted the technology’s high-temperature stability and differentiated performance characteristics — key factors in meeting demanding customer requirements.

Strategic Commercialization Beyond Evs

Rather than targeting electric vehicles first, ION is following a strategic commercialization path similar to the early evolution of lithium-ion technology. The company is initially focusing on high-value, innovative applications where solid-state batteries can deliver immediate advantages.

This approach allows ION to establish production credibility and revenue streams before expanding into larger-scale markets, including EVs, in the future.

Maryland Production Set for 2026

Initial demand will be met at ION’s expanding facility in Beltsville, Maryland. The site is currently undergoing upgrades, including installation of a new sintering furnace to support scaled production.

Commercial production is expected to begin in 2026. As demand increases, ION anticipates expanding beyond its current footprint, with offsite production planning already underway.

What This Means for the Battery Industry

Solid-state batteries have long been viewed as the “next big leap” in energy storage, promising safer chemistry, higher energy density, and longer lifecycle performance compared to today’s lithium-ion cells.

ION’s successful customer qualification signals that U.S.-developed solid-state battery technology is moving closer to real commercial reality — not just prototypes or pilot lines, but validated performance in customer applications.

If production scales successfully in 2026, ION could play a pivotal role in reshaping advanced battery manufacturing in the United States and accelerating the shift toward next-generation energy storage solutions.
