Lyten Acquires Northvolt Sweden Assets, Forms 16 GWh Battery & AI Industrial Hub

U.S.-based battery innovator Lyten has officially completed its acquisition of key Swedish assets from Northvolt, marking one of the most significant battery industry consolidations in Europe this year.

The deal includes Northvolt Ett and Ett Expansion in Skellefteå and Northvolt Labs in Västerås, adding 16 GWh of existing battery manufacturing capacity to Lyten’s portfolio — alongside one of Europe’s largest and most advanced battery R&D centers.

16 GWh of Capacity and Europe’s Largest Battery R&D Center

The acquisition of Northvolt Ett provides:

  • 16 GWh of installed production capacity
  • Over 160 hectares of industrial land
  • Extensive manufacturing infrastructure
  • Access to clean, low-cost hydroelectric power

Meanwhile, Northvolt Labs strengthens Lyten’s research footprint, enabling continued development of long-life lithium-ion NMC cells and accelerating the industrialization of Lyten’s next-generation lithium-sulfur technology.

For Europe’s EV and energy storage ecosystem, this represents critical capacity at a time when localized battery supply chains are becoming strategically essential.

Introducing the Lyten Industrial Hub

Lyten is also launching the Lyten Industrial Hub in Skellefteå — a co-located ecosystem combining battery manufacturing, AI data centers, strategic industrial operations and on-site energy storage infrastructure.

The hub leverages Sweden’s abundant renewable hydro power, positioning it as a model for low-carbon industrial electrification in the EU.

As part of the plan, global data center developer EdgeConneX will acquire a site within the Skellefteå campus. The project has the potential to scale to a 1-gigawatt data center campus, which would rank among the largest in Europe.

Restarting Production and Expanding Across Europe

Lyten will immediately begin restarting production at Northvolt Ett, initially producing lithium-ion NMC cells for battery energy storage systems (BESS), automotive customers and mobility and industrial applications.

Commercial cell production is expected to support Lyten’s Polish BESS facility in the second half of 2026.

Back in October, Lyten also closed its acquisition of Northvolt’s BESS manufacturing facility in Gdańsk and is progressing additional assets in Germany. Altogether, the broader Northvolt acquisition encompasses approximately $5 billion in manufacturing assets.

Lithium-Sulfur: The Next Step

While NMC production restarts in Sweden, Lyten’s long-term strategy centers on scaling its lithium-sulfur battery technology — developed in Silicon Valley — into gigascale manufacturing.

Lithium-sulfur batteries promise higher energy density, reduced reliance on critical minerals like nickel and cobalt and lower lifecycle emissions.

By combining Swedish manufacturing expertise with Silicon Valley innovation, Lyten aims to build a transatlantic battery ecosystem spanning North America and Europe.

600+ New Jobs and EU Strategic Alignment

Lyten is working closely with Swedish unions and plans to hire more than 600 additional employees within the next 12 months, with continued expansion expected in the years ahead.

The move aligns closely with the EU’s newly reinforced battery strategy, which classifies battery production as strategically vital for Europe’s industrial competitiveness and energy independence.

With localized production, renewable-powered facilities, and next-generation battery chemistry in development, Lyten’s Swedish expansion could become a cornerstone of Europe’s next chapter in electrification — from EVs to grid-scale storage and AI infrastructure.
