BMW Neue Klasse Unlocks V2G: Earn Up to €720 Per Year With the New iX3

BMW is turning its upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles into active energy assets. In partnership with E.ON, the automaker is launching Germany’s first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) offer for private customers—allowing drivers to earn money by feeding electricity back to the grid.

The rollout begins with the new BMW iX3, the first Neue Klasse model equipped with BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology.

BMW V2G: How It Works

With bidirectional charging enabled, Neue Klasse models support:

– Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) – Send electricity back to the public grid
– Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) – Power your home
– Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) – Power external devices

The V2G launch package includes:

– BMW Wallbox Professional (11 kW bidirectional charger)
– E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive V2G tariff
–
E.ON V2G Plus feed-in contract
–
Smart meter installation (if required)

Once plugged in, the vehicle automatically charges or discharges based on a jointly developed BMW–E.ON intelligent algorithm, optimizing both grid stability and customer savings.

Earn Up to €720 Per Year

Customers receive an annual bonus of up to €720, simply by keeping their vehicle connected to the bidirectional wallbox with V2G activated.

Importantly, the bonus accrues regardless of whether energy is actively flowing in or out. In addition, discharged electricity is compensated at €0.40 per kWh.

BMW estimates that iX3 drivers could effectively cover up to 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) per year at no charging cost, depending on usage patterns.

All charging targets, battery levels, and bonus tracking are managed via the My BMW App, ensuring full transparency and driver control.

Battery Protection Built In

BMW emphasizes that intelligent safeguards maintain the high-voltage battery within optimal operating conditions. The system prioritizes mobility needs first, ensuring drivers always meet their set departure charge levels.

Early Adopter Incentive: €700 Wallbox Discount

The first 100 BMW iX3 customers who sign up for the E.ON V2G tariff will receive a €700 discount on the BMW Wallbox Professional.

With 11 kW charging capacity, the Wallbox Professional is among the first bidirectional home chargers commercially available in Germany.

Fixed Pricing and Energy Certainty

The E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive V2G tariff offers:

– Fixed per-kWh pricing
– Fixed base fee for household and EV charging
– Annual bonus accumulation up to €720
– €0.40 per kWh compensation for electricity fed back to the grid

This fixed structure provides price certainty—particularly important amid Europe’s energy market volatility.

Supporting Renewable Energy Integration

By enabling EV batteries to act as decentralized energy storage units, V2G helps stabilize the grid during periods of high renewable generation or peak demand.

According to E.ON CEO Filip Thon, the commercial V2G rollout marks a “groundbreaking milestone” in linking electromobility with the broader energy transition.

BMW’s Head of New Business Models, Marcus Krieg, added that Neue Klasse vehicles now become “an active part of the energy ecosystem.”

Alternative Option: Cost-Optimized Charging for All BMW and MINI EVs

BMW is also introducing smart cost-optimized charging for all electrified BMW and MINI models—fully electric and plug-in hybrid—regardless of generation.

The system automatically charges vehicles when electricity prices are lowest, factoring in planned departure times, target charge levels and grid price signals.

It works with:

– BMW/MINI Wallbox Plus
– Multifunction Charger (MFC)
– Any compatible AC charger

Drivers using the E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive tariff can save up to €240 per year, plus receive an additional €50 bonus on top of existing new-customer incentives.

Why This Matters?

Bidirectional charging is widely viewed as a key enabler of large-scale renewable integration across Germany, the UK, and other mature EV markets. BMW’s commercial rollout signals that V2G is moving beyond pilot programs into real-world consumer adoption.

With the Neue Klasse, BMW isn’t just launching a new EV platform—it’s redefining the role of electric vehicles within the energy system.

The BMW iX3 will be the first proof point.
