Volvo Buses has secured an order from Vy Buss for 73 new electric buses that will operate in and around the city Borås, Sweden.
The order comprises 46 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses, 14 Volvo 7900 Electric, and 13 Volvo 8900 Electric, all scheduled to enter operation by April 2027.
“It is especially rewarding to receive this order for the city of Borås, the place where much of our bus manufacturing has its roots,” says Martin Spjern, Country Manager Sweden at Volvo Buses. “With this investment, all city bus traffic in Borås will be fully electrified, marking a significant step forward for sustainable public transport in the region.”
The new electric fleet of complete Volvo buses will serve both city operations and regional routes, including services to Viared – home to Volvo Buses’ manufacturing facility. The order underscores Volvo Buses’ long-standing industrial presence in Borås, where the manufacturing plant became one of the first bus factories globally to run entirely on renewable energy – a milestone achieved in 2020.
“Building on this strong local foundation, we and our dealer Boråsbil have together offered a comprehensive solution that includes service contracts and depot arrangements – ensuring reliability, uptime and long-term performance for the operator,” says Martin Spjern.
Confidence in Volvo Buses’ products, combined with a long-standing service commitment, has been central to the procurement. For passengers, the new buses will deliver greater comfort, increased seating capacity and improved accessibility, including dual wheelchair areas and flexible interior layouts on several routes.
“The move toward electrified buses is an important step toward a more sustainable and climate-smart public transit system. At Vy Buss, we are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Volvo Buses for the delivery of their electric buses for our upcoming transit contract in the city of Borås. This marks the beginning of a long-term, forward-looking partnership to develop public transportation in Borås together,” says Robert Nyberg, CEO of Vy Buss AB.
The buses will be produced through a combined manufacturing process, with chassis built at Volvo Buses’ facility in Borås and bodywork supplied by the company’s partner, MCV. A key element is Volvo Buses’ continuous commitment to a holistic approach to sustainability, with full transparency across the entire production process.
Volvo Buses city and intercity electromobility portfolio consist of the complete Volvo 7900 Electric, Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated, and Volvo 8900 Electric buses, and the Volvo BZR and Volvo BZL electric platforms.
