Canada will impose a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, joining the United States and the European Union in protecting domestic car production.
The duties apply to all EVs shipped from China, which would include those made by Tesla, The Government of Canada said.
The Government of Canada intends to implement a 100 percent surtax on all Chinese-made EVs, effective October 1, 2024. This includes electric and certain hybrid passenger automobiles, trucks, buses, and delivery vans.
Canadian imports of automobiles from China to its largest port, Vancouver, jumped 460% year over year in 2023, when Tesla started shipping Shanghai-made EVs to Canada.
The federal and provincial governments, particularly Ontario and Quebec, have pledged tens of billions of dollars to support the construction and production of EVs at planned sites like the new Stellantis facility in Windsor, Ont., a Honda plant in Alliston, Ontario, and a Volkswagen factory near London, Ont., among others.
