Tesla is recalling more than 475,000 in the U.S. to address rearview camera and trunk issues that increase the risk of crashing.
Tesla plans to recall 356,309 Model 3 vehicles made between 2017 and 2020 to address rearview camera issues. The cable harness for the rear-view camera may be damaged by opening and closing the trunk and prevent the image from displaying, it told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Tesla discontinued the problematic trunk harness at the end of the 2020 model year. All 2021 Model 3 vehicles have a different harness design
A further 119,009 Model S vehicles will also be recalled due to front hood problems.
Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to the issues with the recalled vehicles, the NHTSA said, and the company estimates that only 1% of the Model 3 vehicles will display the defect, compared to 14% of the recalled Model S vehicles.
A letter notifying owners of the issue will be mailed beginning on Feb. 18.
