INFINITI to go electric from 2021

Nissan’s luxury brand INFINITI Motor Company will introduce new vehicles with electrified powertrains from 2021, according to Nissan Chief Executive Officer Hiroto Saikawa, speaking at the Automotive News World Congress on Tuesday.

All new Infiniti models launched from 2021 will be either electric or so-called “e-Power” – demonstrating the full range of ultra-low emission vehicle technology available to INFINITI as the premium brand within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

As a result of this emphasis on ultra-low emission technology, INFINITI expects more than half its global sales to be comprised of electric vehicles by 2025.

“We are going to make Infiniti the premium and highly electrified brand,” Saikawa said on Tuesday. “We are trying to position INFINITI as the premier electrified brand” as part of the five-year Nissan business plan that will extend through 2022.

e-POWER technology features a small gasoline engine that charges a high-output battery, eliminating the need for an external charging source, providing the convenience of re-fuelling with petrol, while offering the same driving experience as a pure EV.

Nissan and alliance partner Renault took an early lead in battery-powered cars with models such as the 2011 Nissan Leaf, still the world’s top-selling electric vehicle.
