Qualcomm announced as New York City ePrix title partner

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. – the Official Founding & Technology Partner of the FIA Formula E Championship – has today been announced as the race title partner for round 9 and 10 of the 2016/17 season, acquiring the naming rights for the inaugural 2017 Qualcomm New York City ePrix.

The Qualcomm New York City ePrix double-header on July 15 & 16 will be the first FIA-sanctioned open-wheel race to take place within the five boroughs of New York City in modern history. Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty will form a dramatic backdrop to watch the fully-electric Formula E cars battle it out around Pier 11 and the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook.

Qualcomm pioneered 3G and 4G – and is now leading the way to 5G and a new era of intelligent, connected devices, including automotive, computing, IoT and healthcare. Qualcomm Halo wireless electric vehicle charging technology powers the Qualcomm Safety Car at all Formula E events.

Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E, said: “As one of our Founding Partners – and now for the first time a race title partner for one of the most anticipated races of the season – Qualcomm Technologies’ continued support and commitment to Formula E has been instrumental. We share many of the same values in the field of innovation and technology transfer, which we’ve already seen with unique wireless charging concepts. I’m looking forward to making history in New York by bringing Formula E to the Big Apple for the first time – it’s going to be an unmissable event.”

Derek Aberle, President, Qualcomm Incorporated, said: “Qualcomm inventions enable widespread innovation, just as motorsport fuels the evolution of the automotive industry. Formula E, including this Qualcomm ePrix race in New York City, is a great testbed for our automotive breakthroughs such as wireless electric vehicle charging. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Formula E to promote the benefits of the latest vehicle technologies as cars become more connected, autonomous and electric.”
