Volvo Cars is expanding its electrified SUV lineup with new long-range plug-in hybrid versions of its best-selling XC60 and XC90. The new models combine significantly larger electric-driving capability with Volvo’s existing petrol-engine technology, offering a practical bridge toward an all-electric future.
For the American market, Volvo says the new XC60 can travel up to 78 miles on electric power, while the XC90 offers up to 73 miles on a single charge. The automaker says the two SUVs together offer the longest electric range of any plug-in hybrids available in the U.S.
In Europe, Volvo quotes electric ranges of up to 200 km (124 miles) for the XC60 and 160 km (99 miles) for the XC90, depending on market and specification.
The new XC60 also receives a substantial exterior and interior redesign, along with upgraded safety and technology features.
Much Longer Electric Range
The biggest change to the new XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids is the increased electric range. Volvo says the new models offer more than twice the electric range of their existing plug-in hybrid counterparts.
The improvement comes from a larger floor-integrated battery combined with a more powerful electric motor. When the battery’s electric energy is depleted or additional power is required, the petrol engine can take over.
That combination allows the XC60 and XC90 to handle many everyday journeys using electric power alone while retaining the flexibility of an internal-combustion engine for longer trips.
Volvo positions the new plug-in hybrids as an important step in its transition toward fully electric vehicles, giving customers more opportunities to drive without tailpipe emissions during daily commutes, school runs and shorter weekend trips.
Both SUVs will continue to be offered with mild-hybrid powertrains as well.
2027 Volvo XC60 Gets a Major Design Update
Alongside its new long-range plug-in hybrid powertrain, the XC60 receives a comprehensive design refresh.
The front end features an updated grille, redesigned bumper, hood and front wings, while new wheels add to the SUV’s updated appearance. Volvo has also refined its signature Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, giving the familiar lighting design a more technical look.
At the rear, redesigned LED taillights, a revised tailgate and a new bumper emphasize horizontal lines and give the XC60 a wider, more confident stance.
Inside, the cabin receives a redesigned dashboard and door panels, along with wood trim, Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather and upgraded ambient lighting. The changes are intended to reinforce the Scandinavian design and premium character that have become central to the XC60.
More Advanced Safety Technology
Safety remains a major focus of the updated XC60.
The SUV gains Volvo’s latest active safety technology, allowing it to detect potential collisions and respond by warning the driver or intervening when necessary. The system can provide automatic emergency steering or braking and can also alert occupants to approaching cyclists before a door is opened.
An upgraded sensor package combines cameras, radars and other sensors to support a range of driver-assistance functions.
Available technology includes lane change assist and a 360-degree camera with 3D view, helping drivers maintain greater awareness around the vehicle.
The XC60 also features an 11.2-inch infotainment display running Volvo Car UX.
Google Gemini Comes to Volvo’s Plug-In Hybrid SUVs
Another technology highlight is the integration of Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant.
The system allows drivers to interact with the vehicle using natural language. It can assist with tasks such as planning journeys, finding stops along a route and managing messages while driving.
The XC90 also gains Google Gemini as part of the latest technology upgrades.
Volvo XC90 Remains a Premium Seven-Seater
The larger XC90 continues to serve as Volvo’s flagship family SUV, combining three-row seating with a focus on safety, comfort and Scandinavian luxury.
The seven-seat SUV receives the long-range plug-in hybrid powertrain while retaining the premium interior features associated with the model. Volvo highlights natural light, wood trim and premium materials as part of the cabin experience.
An available Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system is designed to provide a more immersive audio experience, adding another luxury feature to the large SUV.
A Bridge to Volvo’s Electric Future
Volvo views the new long-range XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids as more than simple powertrain updates. The company says they are an important part of its strategy to provide customers with a path toward full electrification.
“The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment.”
The strategy also allows Volvo to continue investing in established SUV models while electric vehicle adoption continues to grow.
Both models will receive regular over-the-air software updates, allowing Volvo to improve vehicle functionality after purchase.
Production Starts Later This Year
Order books for the new XC60 and XC90, including Black Edition versions, are opening in selected markets. Production is scheduled to begin later this autumn.
For the U.S. market, Volvo says the new XC60 and XC90 T8 AWD Long Range plug-in hybrids are expected to enter production later this fall, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2027.
With substantially more electric range, upgraded technology and a refreshed XC60 design, the new plug-in hybrid SUVs give Volvo another way to bring EV-style driving to customers who are not yet ready to make the switch to a fully electric vehicle.
