
Volkswagen is significantly upgrading its driver-assistance technology for the 2027 model year, giving vehicles based on its MQB Evo and MEB platforms a more capable version of IQ.DRIVE.
The updated system brings improvements to Travel Assist, Emergency Assist Plus, and Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (pACC), while the ID. Buzz gets an additional technology called Road Experience Management (REM). The upgrades are designed to make highway driving easier and improve safety when a driver becomes unresponsive.
Volkswagen says IQ.DRIVE provides one of the most comprehensive standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) packages available on mass-market vehicles in the U.S. Standard features include Travel Assist, Front Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist and Emergency Assist.
The latest upgrades apply to 2027 vehicles based on the MQB Evo and MEB platforms, including the Atlas family, Golf family, Tiguan and ID. Buzz.
Travel Assist Can Now Handle Assisted Lane Changes
One of the most notable IQ.DRIVE improvements is an enhanced Travel Assist system that can help perform driver-initiated lane changes.
When Travel Assist is active and the vehicle is traveling above 45 mph, the driver can partially activate the turn signal to request a lane change. The system uses the vehicle’s rear radar sensors to check for traffic in the adjacent lane.
If the lane is clear, the vehicle can initiate the maneuver automatically.
If traffic prevents an immediate lane change, the system can wait for up to 12 seconds for a safe opening. Drivers receive visual information through the Digital Cockpit indicating whether the requested lane is blocked or the system is ready to make the move.
Importantly, this remains an assisted driving feature rather than fully autonomous driving. The driver remains responsible for supervising the vehicle and the maneuver.
Emergency Assist Plus Can Pull the Vehicle to the Roadside
Volkswagen is also upgrading Emergency Assist with Emergency Assist Plus, which can take additional action when the system detects that the driver may no longer be responding.
The system requires either Lane Assist or Travel Assist to be active. With Lane Assist, multiple lane-departure events without driver intervention can trigger the system. With Travel Assist, the system can activate if it detects no steering-wheel input for 25 seconds.
Before taking action, Emergency Assist Plus uses visual and audible warnings to try to get the driver’s attention.
If the driver remains unresponsive, the vehicle can attempt to move toward the shoulder when the front-facing camera determines there is enough room. If reaching the shoulder is not possible, the vehicle can instead move toward the farthest-right lane.
During the maneuver, the brake lights, turn signals and hazard lights help warn surrounding traffic.
Once the vehicle reaches a safe stopping position, it can shift into Park, activate the hazard lights, sound the horn, unlock the doors, turn on the interior lights and activate the emergency-call function.
Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control Gets Smarter
Volkswagen’s Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control is also receiving several improvements for 2027.
The system can now respond more quickly to changes in posted speed limits. When an increased speed is recognized, the driver receives a notification before the system automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed.
The driver can accept the increase by pressing the accelerator or reject it using the Res button on the steering wheel.
Another major improvement is the ability for pACC to work with ramps and exits. The system can assist with deceleration when approaching an exit and can use navigation information or turn-signal input to help determine the intended route.
This should make adaptive cruise control more useful during longer highway trips, particularly when navigating roads with frequent exits and changing speed limits.

ID. Buzz Gets Cloud-Based Road Experience Management
The 2027 Volkswagen ID. Buzz receives the most distinctive addition: Road Experience Management, or REM.
REM uses cloud-based data collected from vehicles on real-world roads. The system gathers information related to road features such as lane markings, signs and street lighting, helping Volkswagen improve digital maps and the vehicle’s understanding of its surroundings.
That can be particularly useful when cameras have difficulty identifying road markings.
For example, if lane lines are faded or visibility is reduced by poor weather, map-based information can provide additional context to help the vehicle maintain its position rather than relying entirely on camera data.
REM can also use data from surrounding traffic to help determine an appropriate vehicle speed, while remaining within the posted speed limit.
For the ID. Buzz, REM is part of Volkswagen’s In-Vehicle Premium subscription service. A one-year trial is included with the 2027 ID. Buzz and also includes features such as Premium Navigation, Speech, AirConsole gaming, What3Words navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Volkswagen Still Isn’t Offering Hands-Free Highway Driving
The IQ.DRIVE upgrades represent a significant step forward for Volkswagen’s driver-assistance technology, particularly on the ID. Buzz.
However, Volkswagen’s system remains focused on assisted driving rather than hands-free or point-to-point autonomous driving. The driver must continue supervising the vehicle and remain prepared to take control.
The bigger story is how Volkswagen is expanding the capabilities of technology that is already available across much of its lineup. Assisted lane changes, more advanced emergency intervention, improved predictive cruise control and cloud-based road information could make everyday driving safer and less demanding.
For 2027, the ID. Buzz stands out as the Volkswagen model receiving the most advanced combination of these technologies, while the Atlas, Golf and Tiguan families also benefit from significant IQ.DRIVE improvements.
